A Special Father's Day Outing.

 Today the nursing home where my father-in-law lives hosted a special Father’s Day fishing event, and I don’t think there was a dry eye among us. The facility has a small lake with a pier, and for a few precious hours it became the happiest spot around.

One by one, family members helped roll their dad, husband, uncle, loved one, out onto the fishing pier.   Fishing poles where in hand, ready for adventure. What struck me most wasn’t the fish they caught—it was the look in their eyes. Those smiles told stories of boyhood fishing trips, lazy summer afternoons, and memories tucked away for decades. For this short while, they were not residents in a nursing home; they were fishermen on a mission.

Poppie (Sam's dad..who is fixing to turn 97) was no exception! With the help of Mylee, Shanda, and Sam, he settled in and cast his line into the water. He proudly reeled in two tiny fish. Now, they were not exactly record-breakers, but judging by his grin, you would have thought he’d landed a whale! And honestly, that’s what made the day so special.

The funniest part was watching some of the men eagerly toss their lines back into the lake before the workers even had a chance to put a fresh worm on the hook. Details didn’t matter. They were having too much fun to wait! The excitement was contagious, and every cast brought fresh hope that “the big one” might be next.

What a beautiful reminder that joy doesn’t have an age limit. A fishing pole, a sunny day, a little patience, and a chance to make memories can still light up a heart. Today wasn’t really about catching fish—it was about catching happiness, laughter, and a few moments that will be treasured long after Father’s Day has passed.

What a tremendous blessing this day was....not only for the men who call this place home, but for families who were able to share in the joy.  Moments like these remind us what life is truly about: Creating opportunities for others to smile, laugh and revisit treasured memories from years gone by.  For a little while, these gentlemen were not thinking about limitations or challenges, they were simply boys again, standing at the water's edge with a fishing pole in hand and a heart full of excitement.  Watching all of this unfold was a gift to everyone present...
