Rain and Mushrooms

After all the rain that we have had lately, it seems my yard has turned into a mushroom resort.  I walked out yesterday morning and spotted a little family of three standing tall and proud, as if they knew they where the newest fashion to my landscaping.  At first, they looked like dainty little umbrellas waiting for a fairy tea party.

Fast forward to this morning...these things seem to be multiplying.  They have grown and are now opening to look like  big saucers.  One of them has spread so much that it looks like it's trying to provide shade for all the neighborhood ants.

Before anyone gets hungry thinking about mushroom soup, let me set the record straight......these things are poisonous!!  They are called Chlorophyllum molybdites.

Around here, they're better known as the "False parasol."  This mushroom will most likely find a person hugging the toilet if they even think about tasting it.  Beautiful? Yes....Edible? Absolutely not. They are also toxic for dogs/pets.

I love how Nature always finds a way to surprise us after a long soaking rain.  Rain brings plenty of puddles to splash in and it has a way of leaving the grass looking so sparkly.  But...it also brings these funny little umbrellas with stems.

I have to hand it them...they've got style. One even has a design on top that looks like a piece of abstract art.  No need to visit a gallery when you can just step outside into my front yard and see plenty of art.

And this, my friends, is my lesson on mushrooms!!  Know your mushrooms before you attempt to eat them!!

  1. I love how you described the mushrooms almost like little works of art, from their fairy-tea-party beginnings to the big saucers providing shade for ants. Nature really does have a way of surprising us, even if it comes with a warning those “False Parasol” mushrooms are beautiful but definitely not for eating. It’s a fun reminder to appreciate the little wonders right outside our doors. www.melodyjacob.com

  5. I read about Sam. Thank you for keeping us updated. It helps to know more specifically what to pray about.
My advice on mushrooms Shug - don't pick and eat - lol. That would scare me to death!

    1. I am not being so good about waiting on Sam's next MRI. most likely my OCD, but I like to get answers and a two month wait is not easy for me. Me too on the mushrooms..

  8. They do spring up here, too, after we get a good soaking rain. I would never dream of eating a mushroom not found in a grocery store. Blessings, Shug!

  10. I think we've some of their kin in our own backyard, Shug! How do you identify them? The only thing I know about 'shrooms was something taught in Girl Scouts -- the more colorful, the most poisonous. I need to watch more closely, lest our pups decide to take a test bite!

  11. I've always been very leery with the mushrooms because they are a fungus. I think they are so strange looking. Although I do love meals that have mushrooms - pizza, Italian dishes, and more. I'm glad you got so much rain, Shug. I do hope we get some this Fall. It washes everything and makes it clean once again. I love your Header with the three Owls. It's so Fall looking. I've always wanted to see an Owl up close. Have a beautiful day, Shug.

    2. Thank you so very much.. I have found myself being more stressed the past couple of weeks. I prefer to have answers and waiting for the next two months to find out what is next is wearing on me. I so appreciate the prayers...

  12. Two months for answers is much too long. Praying the spots will all be gone and you will have a continuing testimony of God's goodness.
We haven't had enough rain to get mushrooms yet. They do love to pop up in our yard and make wonderful photo ops but I do try to get rid of them asap.
Love your border with the cute owls too.

  13. Yes we have some weird mushrooms in our yard too from time to time. I do not like mushrooms at all...I recall a movie...Kathy Bates and Clint Eastwood...:)

  15. I've never seen a mushroom like that here - it's beautiful.

As a nerd admirer of the natural world, I find fungi and mushrooms to be fascinating. I even have a post nestled in my drafts, waiting to be shared, about fungus. LOL. Fungi, including mushrooms, communicate with each other using chemical signals. They can also influence the behavior of other organisms. Freaky huh? I enjoy caramelized onions and mushrooms, which I often prepare as a topping for juicy steak. Yum.

When my husband overwaters the lawn, we get mushrooms. I've never taken the time to investigate whether they might be poisonous, but we usually knock them down before they can spread.

    Pretty neat mushrooms you have!

  16. These are the same ones that I posted awhile ago!! And now I know what they are, thanks to you!! It is really cool watching them change. Usually poisonous things are a bright color to warn us. But Phil tells me that is only with animals, like poison dart frogs and such.

  17. Ha! So sweet. We often get mushrooms around here too. They always remind me of my sweet Annie. When she was little she was big believer in fairy folk. And we would read fairy books that said if you saw a ring of mushrooms, it meant that fairies had just been there having a party. So she would get SO excited when we would have a circle of mushrooms in the yard. I sure miss those sweet innocent days. :) Maybe with grandkiddos one day ...the magic can be found again.

  19. I love to see the variety of mushrooms that pop up after rainy spell. Sadly, it's been too dry here lately for mushrooms. I wouldn't attempt to eat them even if someone said they were safe. I'm not quite that trusting when it comes to things growing in the woods in the dirt with toads sitting on top and ants underneath and possible fairies dancing on them in the twilight. I'll pick my mushrooms at the grocery store, all packaged up nice and neat. Then if they make me sick I can sue them and get lots of money. LOL> Just kidding. I enjoyed your post. Hope you have a lovely rest of your week.

  20. We too get these mushrooms in our garden when it rains. Pretty but dangerous.
    God bless.
