I had no intentions of going into town on Saturday....when I say town, I mean the nearest big city from where I live. LOL..it is only 10 miles away from our small little town.
My plan was to stay home...finish our pear project, avoid any crowds and just hang out with Sam. BUT...(this is certainly a big 3 letter word when it comes to a conversation) BUT.... we (Sam and I) decided to make a quick run to the grocery store and grab a sandwich for dinner that evening. Simple enough, right?
Since we were already in town, I thought, Why not swing by Dillard's real quick? The store was having a shoe sale, and I wanted to pick up a pair for my granddaughter (Tori.) She just finished here classes to become a dental assistant (proud Shug moment) and started her new job last week. The staff is required to wear black slacks, closed-toe dress shoes, and blouses provided by the Dental office. (Tori will also be attending college to work on her degree to be a Dental Hygienist.)
Did I remember it was Tax-Free Weekend in Texas? Absolutely not! Did I realize my mistake the second I walked in? Absolutely Yes!
I knew exactly what shoes I wanted and in what size. On a normal day, this would have been a 10-minute mission. But Saturday? The check out lines were long and there were so many shoppers. I could clearly see that the Back to school shopping rush was in progress. It took me a good 40 minutes.
Still, as I stood in that crowd of bargain-hunting chaos, I couldn't help but smile. Parents and kids alike were all shopping, looking for the best deals they could find on shoes. All of this brought back memories of when my siblings and my parents would go to "K. Wolens" and do our back to school shopping.
K. Wolens was the only Department store around and all of our shopping could be done in this one store. When you are shopping for 4 kids, it was a blessing to have one stop shopping.
I finally walked out Dillards with the perfect shoes for my granddaughter and perhaps a tad bit more patience in my pocket. My somewhat chaotic shopping trip was well worth it. I mean, these are not just any pair of shoes that I purchased.....they are for a young women (whom I love deeply) stepping into her new career. I know her future will be bright in this work field that she has chosen.
The positive side of me says.....This is great, this is fun, and I am thankful that I can do this for Tori. Hey...crowded stores and the unexpected detours are just reminders that we all are just trying to find our footing....Tax free or Not.. 😀
Sometimes the wait is just part of the gift!!
Shug...
Our tax-free weekend was the first one of the month. As I didn't need to purchase anything I stayed away from the stores (which I figured was helping out those who really needed to be there).
ReplyDeleteWe don't have tax free weekends in Michigan, but what a great idea and so helpful for back to school shopping. Glad you and Sam got out and so sweet to get shoes for Tori!
ReplyDelete😊❤️
ReplyDeleteI like that you added the wait is part of the gift. I am going to remember that phrase hopefully from now on.
ReplyDeleteYears ago, I was a dental assistant and back then, Dentists could train their own. I decided early on, that I didn’t enjoy working in peoples mouths. People still smoked back then or chewed tobacco and I couldn’t get past the mouth smells. 👃If the person had periodontal disease, there was a bad smell. Not to mention body odors. I realized I had a sensitive, sense of smell. No masks or gloves. 😷
ReplyDeleteI always think of that when I go to the dentist now.
You are such a thoughtful Grandma to gift Tori with new shoes. I hope her new job brings her much happiness.
Just a reminder that my post on Extroverts is up. 🙃
DeleteWhenever I had to wait in a line of some sort, I'd always tell the person in front or behind me that it felt good to stand still for more than 5 seconds, for a switch. *haha* It seems I was always running here or there back in those days. Good luck to your granddaughter. It sounds like she's "going places" as we always used to say. :-) Love, Andrea xoxo
ReplyDeleteEverywhere is busy just before school starts again - new clothes, new shoes, new bags, new stationery.
ReplyDeleteA fun post Shug... I had a lesson in patience recently too.

Tax-free weekends right before school starts sounds crazy, Shug, but I'm sure it's worth the savings. Congrats to Tori for landing that new job! Blessings!
ReplyDeleteOh my , yes .. back to school is a lesson in patience for sure.
ReplyDeleteWe don't have tax free weekends but it sure is a great idea. Living in California there isn't a "Tax-Free" anything..sorry for the political statement.
We went to Costco Saturday. First mistake but we had to get some things. There was a gazillion cart bumping crazies up and down every aisle. Lesson learned...
