Today was the opening day for the
*****TEXAS STATE FAIR*****
Texas State Fair first opened in 1886.
Big Texas 2024. Big Tex stands 55 feet tall.
The Texas State Fair would not be the same without Big Tex. His Distinct strong voice greets Fair goers by saying "HOWDY FOLKS"
His first debut to the State Fair was in 1952.
Before he was Big Tex, he was a Big Santa!
The big Santa was originally located in a small town about 100 miles East of Dallas by the name of Kerns, Texas. It was built to attract Christmas Shoppers.
Fair officials paid $750 for the Santa in 1951 and the big Santa was transformed into "BIG TEX"
The face on the Santa makes me laugh.
1952 Big Tex
I have photos of Sam and I standing in front of him back in 1972, but sadly, I could not find them today. I will have to go through some more photo albums to find them.
A few of the NEW foods at this year's state fair include:
1. Bluebonnet Bliss - Nothing says Texas like the new Bluebonnet Bliss by Dippin’ Dots®. Indulge in the classic Vanilla Ice Cream Dippin’ Dots® mixed with the fan-favorite Cherry ‘n Blue Razz Icee® flavor. This flavorful duo was created just for the Fair and is hand-mixed just for you! Stop by their Midway booth or at the newly renovated stand by the Front Gate.
2. Caramel Macchiato Fritters - A classic, heaping serving of delicious caramel forms the nucleus of these creamy coffee cake balls. Each cake ball is dipped in beignet batter and fried until golden brown. With three to an order, these Caramel Macchiato Fritters are garnished with whipped cream, caramel, and white chocolate drizzle. You didn’t think we forgot the coffee, did you? For a finishing touch, use your syringe full of espresso to inject into every delicious bite! Coffee chains, beware…there’s a new Macchiato in town!
3. Cheeseception - One heck of a sandwich! No—you’re not seeing double. This is a sandwich inside of a sandwich! Savory mushrooms, crisp arugula, and prosciutto with melty, sweet, and smoky cheeses, all in between classic grilled cheeses. All the flavors to make your taste buds and your stomach want more.
Ok, all that stuff you listed, sounds really good, especially the Caramel Macchiato Fritters, wow. Wishing you a beautiful day my friend.
ReplyDeleteThank you for the good wishes. I can only imagine how much weight a person could gain, by just taking in the smell of all these foods.
DeleteGosh, "Big Santa" looks positively creepy!
ReplyDeleteFeeling sad that all those years I lived in Texas and never made it to the fair. These (food) descriptions are making my fat cells applaud.
Ha...that Santa does look quite creepy. I have friends who attend every year...we live about a 100 miles away from the state fair, but just never take the time to go. Have a wonderful Saturday.
DeleteHi Shug~ Wow, Big Tex has certainly changed through the years, and like most men, he aged gracefully ;0) Fair food is always so fascinating to me! It all looks delicious, I would love to try the cookie butter nachos, they sound really good. My daughters favorite fair food is the donut hamburger... literally a hamburger with a donut instead of a bun. It sounds terrible to me, but she likes it. Oh, and how could I forget the, deep-fried Oreos, eeekkkk! Have a great week-end, Shug! Hugs, Barb
ReplyDeleteI'm not to sure about that donut burger. It is interesting to see all of the things that people come up with on the food court. my understanding is that you have to qualify to have your food looked at by the judges and it is a huge process. Hugs to you Barb
DeleteI love Big Tex! I'm not a fan of crowds, Shug, so state fairs aren't an attraction to me. The food sounds absolutely delicious and decadent at the same time. Have a blessed weekend!
ReplyDeleteI really used to love going to the fair, but from my understanding, the crowds are huge and I then think about the danger involved.
DeleteThat big Santa was really big - but I like Big Tex better. I love fairs. I also love all the foods you mentioned - BUT not for right now.
ReplyDeleteI like fairs as well. Our East Texas Fair is going on as well...It is not far from our town, but the cost is way too expensive to get in...not counting the food.
DeleteFun to hear about Big Tex and all the fair foods:)
ReplyDeletethank you....Big Tex is sure Big
DeleteBig Tex is the most Texas thing I have ever seen!
ReplyDeleteyou are right...at 55 feet tall....he is big
DeleteWow, that's a whole lot of exotic concoctions. I feel the pounds just jumping on me reading this.
ReplyDeleteNow that's what I call a Big Tex. His smile as Santa is a hoot.
Enjoy your Sunday.
Sue
The fair always has a lot of good food, and you are right...not sure how some people come up with all of the concoctions. I do think that the Santa is funny. Have a happy Sunday
