This morning, I am lingering a little longer with my coffee... (I certainly do not need the extra caffeine....) I'm here because the note attached to my computer is saying ... Sit awhile!
"When they ask me if my cup is half full or half empty, my response is that I am thankful I have a cup."
These words hold more wisdom than I often give them credit for. This world that we live in loves to label us. Are you an optimist? Are you a pessimist? Are you strong or are you struggling? In my stillness, I am noticing how often we are being taught to evaluate our lives by what's missing or what is overflowing. I have to ask myself if I am simply noticing what is.
Being thankful for the cup doesn't mean that my coffee is always hot, just the way I've always seemed to demand it to be. Some days I'm too occupied to even notice that I have a cup of coffee sitting beside me. What happens? It gets cold.
Crazy as it might seem..I do not do lukewarm drinks. I want my coffee or my hot chocolate HOT. I want my tea ICED cold. But...during all this time, I fail to realize that hey, I HAVE A CUP!!
The question isn't really whether my cup is half full or half empty. The better question is: Am I paying attention to the gift in front of me?
This morning I'm going to choose to notice my cup. I'm thankful to have one to hold and I'm thankful for what is in it. Many people in this world have not a single cup and most likely not a beautiful cup.
I would encourage you, just as I sit here reminding myself, to take a look at your cup. Thank God for it. Hold it with grace, and trust that it will be filled each and every day.
Shug....💛

I like your thought on paying attention to the gift in front of you, great reminder!
ReplyDeleteI saw the Sam update. Praying over your appt today and for the immunotherapy to be effective.
We should notice the cup we are blessed to hold and be grateful always for its contents. Prayers lifted for Sam! Blessings, Shug!
ReplyDeletethis is great, I will try to remember this. it is good you are being STILL, we will all learn what you learn. Waiting to here what comes next.
ReplyDeleteSuch a beautiful piece of wisdom for us to ponder today, Shug. Thank you.
ReplyDeleteOK. This one is everything, my friend. Absolutely beautiful writing with such insight. Thank you for that. I am going to remember this always. And for the record, I have to have my coffee hot too! In fact, I literally put it in the microwave after I add the creamer!
ReplyDeletea tip: milk or creamer first, then coffee. Then the hot coffee warms the milk instead of the cold milk cooling the coffee. I don't know why it works, but it does! lol
DeleteThis is a very special post, and I'm so glad I came over to visit this morning, Shug. The cup I'm using today is the gingerbread and peppermint cup my son gave me, and Yes, I love it. And your Header is simply beautiful and so wintery. Thank you for reminding me to be thankful for the cup!
ReplyDeleteI just read Sam's update, and have said a prayer for him and you. love you, my friend.
DeleteHi, I read the new post about Sam. I pray daily for you both. I am sending extra prayers.
ReplyDeleteI also love my coffee hot, my hot tea hot and my cold drinks cold. ;-) Two peas in a pod here.
I really enjoyed your post today. Thank you!
Carla
Yes Mam...Hot it is and cold it is. Thank you Carla for the prayers. We are sure fighting a battle but I know God is on our side.
DeleteShug, this is such a wonderful devotional! And it is right on point, I agree totally. I absolutely love your wildlife header!
ReplyDeleteJust read the update on Sam. Praying for the appointment and the plans for further meds and times with the doctors.
ReplyDeleteYes, I have to refocus sometimes and think about "the cup" and not "stuff". Thanks for the reminder and I drank from my Merry Christmas mug this morning. It makes me feel good and I always think about the friend who gave it to me.
(((hugs)))
Sue
What an awesome mini sermon. I just love that. Remember the cup. You are so right. I am a middle of the road person. I want to be an optimist - and keep a grateful journal which helps - but I can be a pessimist sometimes too and I don't want to be! You blog is so beautiful and classy.
ReplyDeleteP.S. Just read the side post about Sam. I hope it was a positive visit this morning.
ReplyDeleteNo cup for me but I have a water jug that is usually full of Crystal Light Lemonade! AND I am thankful for it!:)
ReplyDeleteIt is great to be reminded to be thankful for the cup. So many times, life seems to feel that we can't just slow down and be grateful for the very gifts in front of us.
ReplyDeleteI tell ya ... yestereday after FINALLY taking down the last Christmas tree, I made a cuppa and the tea was soooo good. I just love those quiet little happy moments.
ReplyDeleteRegarding your comment about not trusting yourself to make noodles ... It's great fun and if you have time and/or the interest, please check out Pasta Grannies on YouTube. Very good place to start and I have no doubt that you can make your own noodles. It's actually a great practice in stillness and calm. Very relaxing job to make homemade noodles. And you can control what goes in it for Sam.
So fun. So, so, so fun.
Praying for a good appointment for Sam.
ReplyDeletePraying for Sam and also for you. And yes, to the hot drink being hot, and the cold drink being cold! No lukewarm for me either! And your cup is beautiful. And yes, I do count my blessings and thank the Lord that I have cupboard full of cups and so much more...and I am truly thankful for all that God has done for us. Praying to be more appreciative of what we have is a good way to begin the new year. Amen.
ReplyDeleteMy coffee cups aren't necessarily beautiful, but I do take my time each morning --trying to feel which one's message and/or design best matches what's in my heart. I want to print this and tape to the inside of the cupboard door. Thank you!
ReplyDeletePS - Still praying!
What a wonderful way of looking at it. I really like this. I think tomorrow morning when I am lingering over coffee I am going to take a moment to be thankful for the cup
ReplyDeleteThank you for the reminder.
ReplyDeleteI don’t drink coffee, but amen to being grateful for what we have. Especially in trying times. Still praying for Sam and you, and thank you for the updates. ❤️
