Icy Cabbage Hodgepodge

It's a icy CABBAGE  kind of Hodgepodge Day.....

Did you know that even when there is a hard freeze, the outer leaves may get damaged but the head often survives?  AND...Cabbage supplies Vit. C, Vit K, Vit B^ and folate, Potasium, Calcium and magnesium.

1. I live in the south so we're pretty much only talking about the weather right now. Give us a weather report from where you live. Does the kind of weather you're having today affect your mood in some way?

What our area looks like right now ↑↑↑↑.  We still have a lot of ice and especially in the shady areas.  Many of our country roads are still covered in ice.

My mood?  I'm still trying to recover from this head cold, so just feeling a bit yuck.  Just keeping it real.  This too shall pass!!

2.  Avocados, kale, cauliflower and cottage cheese have all had their time to shine. 2026 brings us the year of the cabbage. Is this a vegetable you like? If so, what are some of your favorite dishes that call for cabbage?

I LOVE cabbage!!  The only thing I don't love is the smell it leaves in my kitchen when I am cooking it.

One of my very favorite cabbage dishes is:  Cabbage soup!!  The more cabbage, the more I enjoy it.  My second favorite would be Spanish slaw.  YUM!!    Cabbage, dill pickles, green bell peppers, fresh parsley, shredded carrots, red bell peppers...

3. Was a Cabbage Patch Doll a part of your childhood? Or maybe your children's childhood? What's a toy trend from your childhood you remember wanting for your own?

Oh Yes...the infamous Cabbage Patch Dolls...The gift that every parent thought their daughter had to have.  Both of our daughters each had a couple of them.  They Still Have Them!!

I so remember the 1980's....All of the Toy Store madness...the long lines.  The competitive sport of finding these dolls.  The adoption papers and the unique names!  The soft faces, yarn hair, and the iconic signature.

Back in my younger years it was "BARBIE".... I remember going to the Sears store and seeing the dolls and the outfits that could be purchased for the dolls.  I had a few....but I was more into playing outside with my sister and brothers.  Riding bikes, shooting BB guns, playing hide and seek.

4. Something you've spent a lot of time doing lately?

Enjoying our home...cooking (Yes, I have been doing a lot of cooking)....spending time with my husband and taking care of him.  Reading blogs as I love the wisdom that I gain from all of my blogging friends.

5. Somehow it's the last week of January...sum up your month in just three sentences.

    1. January felt full in all the ways that matter...tending to family, going to doctor appointments and showing up for the BIG moments while learning to pivot when plans shifted.

    2. January held a mix of concerns as well as celebrations and meaningful milestones that all seemed to weave together as they should.

     3.  I have been learning to be content and steady....not rushing, but allowing myself the extra time I need to to sit quietly and enjoy being home.

6. Insert your own random thought here.

Why have I waited so long to go through and delete pictures on my phone and my laptop?  The past weekend (during our ICE days) I deleted over three thousand pictures from my computer and my iPhone.  Many of them were duplicates and many were pictures of things that I no longer need.   It felt really good to get this done!!

Wishing you all a day full of sunshine...

Shug..💛

  1. I love a good phone photo clean up. I have tried for the past several months to do a little trick my daughter mentioned. I type in the date (no year) in the search bar and all the photos taken on that date come up. Then I delete as I want. It's less overwhelming and slowly but surely I'm getting there. I hope you're feeling better! Reading blogs today has put me in the mood to make cabbage soup.

  2. Well done on the photo clean up - I do it periodically but not as often as I should and I keep meaning to get the best pics printed but..... Hope you're soon over your cold. We've had no snow but sooo much rain in January but today the sun is shining.

    1. I usually wait until I get a message saying I'm almost out of space. Woo hoo though..it took some time, but I got it done.

  3. Just thinking about doing a major photo dump stresses me out. 😩 They are already saved in multiple clouds out there. We're looking at a new desktop sometime this year so I won't bother with that chore. The phone is easier. The frosted cabbage makes a pretty photo.

    1. It stresses me out too, but I needed to get it done. You wouldn't believe how many duplicate photos I had and why, I do not know. I had to go to google photos, amazon prime as well as my phone... way too many.

  4. I love cabbage. :-) There is nothing like going out to the garden and picking a fresh head of cabbage to make a salad.
I know what you mean about a good phone clean/computer files clean, it makes one feel good.
Sending a HUG... get well soon.

    1. Cabbage has been good for Sam, so we have been eating a lot of it, along with Brussel sprouts and broccoli. I had way too many pictures that were duplicated on my phone...yikes.

    1. Still fighting this cold. Seems like all I can do is sit here and be still...and stayed covered up with my blanket. As always Sue...we both appreciate your prayers.

  6. I didn't know that cabbages survive so well. All of the ice sounds awful. I hope you feel better soon.
I think that's why I like to eat cabbage when I am out for a Sunday lunch because of the smell it leaves.
I did the same, sorting out my photos on my phone and laptop over the last few weeks. It freed up so much space.

  9. I love cabbage so much that I used to make it twice a week when we were younger. A few years ago, I even saw Cabbage Patch dolls in the Dollar Store! I'm sorry about the dietician; I had been praying that she would be more of a help than this!

  10. Sorry you still have the head cold. Not fun. Love me some cabbage as well. Right now kale and spinach are in the mini pressure cooker with leftover red sauce and garbanzo beans. If I had any cabbage left, I'da tossed that in too!

Feel better soon, if not sooner ❤️

  12. I enjoyed your memories of the Cabbage Patch doll craze. Thankfully, since I only had boys, I didn't have to do that. My doll was a gift in the late 80's after the frenzy was over. And yes, cabbage is stinky to cook, but in some ways it is a comforting, homey aroma that makes you feel like you are going to have something really good to eat. LOL. In addition to my Hobo Stew recipe that I shared, I often fix cabbage and either smoked sausage or Kielbasa and then serve it over mashed potatoes. That's comfort food for sure. I hope you feel better soon. Colds are no fun anytime. I don't even want to talk about pictures in our phones/computers, etc., that never get printed, so in the future there will be no pictures to look at! Crazy, but I can't afford to print them...there's too many! It's a dilemma I think about but try not to stress over.
TAke care and try to stay warm!! We have colder weather coming this weekend.

  14. Hello, what a pretty header on your blog. Hooray for a cabbage lover. Your January did sound complicated but you seem to be dealing well. Good for you for getting rid of excess photos. I did the same thing getting ready for our trip. I was surprised how long it took me. Hope the last days of January are a breeze. Stay cozy.

  15. Like you, I like cabbage but yes, there is the smell….

I have to say that one aspect of raising my children in the 80s that I did not enjoy was trying to find that popular toy they wanted for Christmas. We bought a lot of Star Wars vehicles.

Regarding Barbie dolls, when my granddaughters got into them, my son asked if I would sew some modest clothing for the dolls because he and my daughter-in-law did not approve of the store-bought Barbie wardrobe choices.

Yes, deleting unnecessary pictures on my phone and laptop has become a necessary pastime.

  16. You freed up a ton of space on your items there.
I love cabbage and cabbage soup is good for the stomach. I agree about the smell.
Same here for the Cabbage Patch Dolls.
In Helen, GA there is a Cabbage Patch Hospital where they are born and named. True.
    I had Barbies myself.
    Andy was Ben Ten.
I love the header on your post.

  17. I was just telling another blogger, I strongly suspect cabbage soup is coming to our home sooner rather than later. It's been decades!
Every morning I go to my phone's photos, type in the date in the search bar and it brings up everything I've taken on (say) January 28. This way it doesn't feel so overwhelming a task. Now, if I could only get motivated to tackle the hard copies/scrapbooks!
