Mattress Mix-Up

Thank you Lord for the Blessings of a wonderful weekend...

And now for my mattress dilemma!!

You would think that buying a mattress would be simple....pick a size, pick a comfort level....pay for it and wait for the delivery truck.  Well, apparently not in my world.  My "brand new KING" mattress showed up on Saturday...only, it wasn't the king I was expecting.  Would you believe it was the cousin of a King mattress?

A tall, skinny cousin and it's name is "California King."  Same blood line but it's a cousin from the West coast.

My bed frame had other plans for this California King mattress.  My bed frame sent this cousin right back onto the truck and it was soon headed back to the store.  Seriously, trying to fit a California King into a King frame is like trying to stuff a Thanksgiving turkey into a toaster oven.

A tape measure is one of those tools that never lies!  It faithfully stretches, retracts, and clicks into place with full confidence.  The problem in my case wasn't the tape measure...it was ME who was doing the measuring.  If you want true accuracy in measuring a mattress, it might be good for the eyes behind it to have a cup of coffee first.

A standard king bed is:  76 inches wide and 80 inches long

A California Kind bed is:  72 inches wide and 84 inches in length.

Due to my error we now wait another 3 weeks for the right mattress to arrive.  In the meantime, I'm trying to make peace with my old mattress which most likely, knew it was headed out to the dump!! Hopefully it will not retaliate by exaggerating every dip and lump for the next three weeks.

Perhaps there is come kind of silver lining to this story.  Maybe it is how life is trying to teach me to have patience.

Lot's of Laughs!

Shug.....

  1. I know too well, and sympathise with, your mattress problems. I bought a memory mattress. Now it is blackmailing me about what goes on in bed.

    God bless.

  2. Oh no! We don’t have a king size bed although we should as both the lab and cat sleep on top of our bed at our feet! We all cozily share a queen. I’ve heard of a California queen but just thought that was what they called a king here. I had no idea of the measurements. Well at least it can be remedied and is just an inconvenience. One of those first world problems! Here’s hoping your mattress doesn’t hold any grudges for the next 3 weeks as you wait. 😬

  3. We actually have a California king-sized bed that's fairly new. We love it, but you are so right - it won't fit in a king-sized frame no matter what you do. Hope the new mattress is exactly right, Shug. Blessings!

    1. I am almost positive that when we purchased the bed and the mattresses years ago that the salesman told us it was a California King.. He was wrong..LOL

    1. I had to try to find some kind of humor after me making the mistake and giving the furniture store the wrong measurements. lesson learned!

  6. Since I have been guilty of measuring issues in the past, I get this! Hope you get the mattress sooner rather than later.

    1. I sure hope so too Anne. this is a very nice furniture store and they have always been spot on with deliveries... I'm guessing it will come sooner.

  7. Measuring isn't my strong suit either. We have a California King and had to get all new linens for it. The fitted sheet for me is like the cartoons I see about making the bed. I am exhausted by the time I am done. I get my steps in by the time I am done ... haha ...
I do love the extra room though.
Here's hoping you can survive another 3 weeks to get what you want.
By the way, I love your header..

    1. I've never been good at Math, but is a measuring tape really math? My son-in-law who is a genius at Math would really be giving me a hard time about this. I'm with you about those sheets...wow, it takes all your energy just to get the fitted sheet on right...

  9. You, my friend, are definitely blessed with the gift of gab. I'm sorry about your mattress mix up. Three weeks is a long time to wait when your mattress is stinky, but your storytelling had me laughing all the way through. I hope the new one shows up sooner!! Until then sleep tight!

    1. Oh Kim...I probably gab too much. The good thing is, that our old mattress is still very comfortable to me.. It was just time to get a new mattress though..

  10. Oh my! That's not good! So, I guess it means that people in California are taller and skinnier than the people in the rest of the country? You are a good sport, my friend.
I'm just sorry that you have to wait another three weeks for the right King to come along. Thankfully you have your King Sam to wait it out with you. :)

I remember several years ago now that we purchased a new mattress for the guest bedroom and when they delivered it, they couldn't make the turn in our stairway to get it upstairs to the bedroom. They told us about another mattress (and now I don't remember what it is called) but they assured me that they could get it upstairs. They brought the new mattress and was able to get it upstairs...and none too soon because we were expecting guests that very night!

Alls well that ends well, I guess.

  11. Glad your mattress story ended up good. I was sure wondering Saturday if the heavy mattress was going to be able to make the turn to go into our bedroom...One thing that helps me laugh about it is that I know this was my mistake. lol...lesson learned...pay attention to the measurements.

  12. Oh my goodness, I would be so frustrated! And it is all the manufacturer's fault for naming the two different sizes almost the same thing!

  13. Such a royal pain (see what I did there?) but agree with you. I always try to find the good or lesson in life's little frustrations. I know I lack patience often so I say the same thing when I run into something like this. A chance to work to improve my virtues. Lol Hope your mattress comes soon! :)

  14. Oh nooooo! At least you're able to laugh at yourself and knock wood, the old one won't hold it against you.

  15. Sorry to hear about your mattress dilemma. It sounds like something that would happen at my house! lol Hopefully your new mattress will come in early :)

  16. I don't get why twin, full queen and king weren't enough sizes to choose from. Why did they have to add a California king in there?
That measuring thing sounds like something I would do.

  17. I never knew there were two different king sizes.
    How frustrating.

  18. I hope that old mattress cooperates for three more weeks! lol

  19. Oh gosh, Shug, I never knew there were two sizes of King mattresses. That was an unfortunately dilemma. I'm sure the time for mattress #2 to arrive will come fairly quickly. Like you, I am THRILLED the air is cooler. Wonderful! Take care, Shug. And thanks for your visits and comments to Writing Straight from the Heart. Susan

  23. I have no clue which I have, its huge, and this is good knowledge except by the time I need it, it will have left my brain never to return. I did not know you have to wait on a mattress. there might just be a lot I don't know and that is shocking!

  24. Oh dear, what a dilemma! So glad you hadn't already disposed of your old mattress! It reminds me of my recent furniture purchase of the recliner that didn't work out and had to be returned and we bought a different one. Sometimes things just don't work out like we hoped. I'm glad most places have reasonable return policies!
