A Fawn at the Cemetery

Good morning!!

Yesterday afternoon, I drove over to the cemetery to change the flowers on my loved ones' headstones. The air was so calm and it felt like one of those afternoons that was meant to be savored. When I finished with the flowers, I spent a little extra time brushing away dust from the stones and making sure the flowers were perfect.  Just an act of love that connects my heart to the ones I miss so deeply.

Just as I was about to leave, I caught sight of movement at the edge of the cemetery.  A little fawn was darting alongside the fence. I could tell that it was frantically looking for a way to get free from the fenced area.  Before I could fully process it, the poor thing tried to squeeze through a narrow opening in the chain-link fence. It's head and front legs slipped through, but its back half was stuck tight between the link fence and a brick column.

My heart sank. Oh dear, what was I going to do??  I pulled over, got out of my car and tried everything I could think of. I gently pushed and then I tried lifting its back legs, but the fawn was scared and kicking wildly.  Finally, I called City Hall to see if I could get an officer to come help me. Within minutes, an officer arrived and together we came up with a plan.  We clipped wires and the officer was able to free the little deer.  My appreciation goes out to our small town City Hall for sending the officer to help me and Big Thanks to Officer "S" for being so quick.... and for freeing the little fawn.

The moment it was loose the little deer bolted into the woods. It was Free!  Just watching it disappear made my heart feel lighter. Even at the cemetery, a place of stillness and remembrance, God allowed me to be a part of a small but precious moment of life being set free.

On my way home, I couldn't shake the picture from my mind. Sometimes we run into places we were never meant to go, and before we know it, we're stuck.  Fear keeps us kicking. Pride keeps us trying to wriggle our own way out. But true freedom often comes when help arrives....when God steps in and makes a way where there seemed to be no way.

The fawn reminded me of this promise:

"He brought me out into a spacious place; He rescued me because He delighted in me."

Psalm 18:19

I was unable to capture a picture of the deer after it got loose...but I am positive it found it's mom.

  1. Oh Shug, what a beautiful story, and you told it brilliantly. I'm very fond of the deer, so your story got to me right away. I'm so glad the fawn was set free. You remind me of one who thinks fast in a crisis, and one that is determined to help someone that is desperately in need, with any resources you can find, and mostly with the love and care that is in your heart. Thank you for being the special one you are. I loved your story so much that I will pass it on to my family. Bless you, Shug.
