This post is mainly for those who have asked about Sam and his health situation. How it started and his symptoms.
Sadly, Sam had been complaining about his right side for several years now. When he would mention it to our Doctor, the doctor would tell him that he thought it was fatty liver and that he needed to eat a proper diet.
Two years ago, we were in enjoying a trip in Branson Mo. with a few of our friends...We were going to be leaving to head home on Sunday morning. Sam woke me up around 2:30 that Sunday morning and was hurting so bad on his right side...He knew it was a kidney stone. Needless to say, a friend of ours drove home and thankfully I had some pain medication with me. I gave Sam a couple of them and he slept most of the way home.
We did go to the doctor that following Monday and Sam did have a kidney stone. He actually had several kidney stones, and had to have surgery to remove them. All of this resulted in needing to have an MRI. The MRI came back showing that Sam's liver was sick!! Not only did he have a fatty liver, but the fatty liver had turned in to Cirrhosis of liver with lesions.
Sam was referred to a liver specialist but we had to wait several months for his appointment. I think we waited 5 months before being able to see this specialist. During this time, I noticed that things did not seem right for Sam, especially with his thinking. Not only was he exhausted all the time, but his thinking was not clear. Once again (during the wait to see the specialist) we saw our family doctor. He checked Sam's ammonia level and it was very high. This indicated that his liver was not being able to get rid of the toxins in body. When this happens, toxins go to the brain which can cause encephalopathy, which is exactly what was happening with him. Our doctor started him on a strong antibiotic to help with this issue.
We finally were able to get in to see the Liver specialist and through a series of test it was determined that Sam does have NASH (Non-Alcoholic Steatohepatitis). Before Sam's diagnosis, I did not know that a person who never drinks alcohol could have cirrhosis of the liver.
His meds for encephalopathy had to be increased because he was struggling and his cognitive thinking seemed to be getting worse. We now have that somewhat under control, but he will have to remain on the meds for a very long time.
During his October 2024 appointment with the specialist, his blood counts were the same as what they were on our first visit with him. But then, we saw the specialist again in March 2025 and the tumor marker level had jumped from 9 to 49. The doctor immediately knew that Sam most likely had a tumor. Another MRI was done to verify that yes, he had a malignant tumor.
Not only was he exhausted each day more than ever, but his body was just not functioning in a healthy way.
We then saw a Radiologist as well as an oncologist and an oncologist Surgeon. Unfortunately, Sam is not a candidate for surgery. The Radiologist performed a radiation treatment called Y90 which was done at the hospital. First they had to do what is called a Mapping of the veins that lead directly to the tumor. The next week, the procedure was done. They went through his groin and delivered a large amount of radiation to the tumor. Now, we are in a waiting time! We have to wait until August 6th just to see if the radiation has killed out the tumor or if all the cancer cells are gone. He will have another MRI to determine this. If it is not all gone, they will go back in and do the same procedure.
He will have to have an MRI done every 3 months to keep a watch out for more tumors or the spread of cancer cells to his lungs or bones. I am trusting that this first round of radiation has taken care of ALL Cancer cells.
Specific Prayer request:
1. The tumor is pressing against his diaphragm, which is causing him to have a bad cough.... We need this tumor to disappear for this reason as well.
2. His energy level is very, very low and he needs prayers for this level to increase.
3. All cancer cells to be GONE!
4. That the encephalopathy will not worsen.
5. For complete and total healing.
I BELIEVE THAT GOD IS OUR HEALER AND I BELIEVE IN THE POWER OF PRAYER!!
Lessons we have learned:
1. Be your own advocate....if you have discomfort or pain somewhere in your body....request an MRI or get a second opinion. A simple MRI done earlier may have prevented Sam's fatty liver from turning into cirrhosis.
2. If a particular specialist is booked and you have to wait 5 months to see them, ....FIND A DIFFERENT SPECIALIST.
3. Ask questions, ask questions and ask questions.
Become educated in what you are dealing with and insist the medical team keep you up to date on all procedures.
We both appreciate so very much the prayers from each of you....Thank you, thank you, thank you!!
Shug.....
You are in my prayers
ReplyDeleteWhat a journey you are on. I hope the treatment has been successful and that Sam starts feeling stronger soon. I agree with your advice - five months is too long to wait for urgent treatment.
ReplyDeleteMy goodness. I'm sorry that Sam (and you and your family), are going through this. Sending you alllll the healing wishes in the world. Along with huggs and a box of fresh baked cookies. Beacuse you know know, it's cookies. And why not.
ReplyDeleteThank you, Shug, for taking the time to let us know exactly where Sam is in this health journey. You have my prayers for healing and I will make sure to mention your situation at church tomorrow. God bless you both and shrink that tumor!!!
ReplyDeleteThank you for sharing your family's personal details. I will continue to send prayers.
ReplyDeleteThank you, Shug for these details and for the list of prayers Sam needs. It helps to understand what others are going through in their lives. I ask you now, Lord for the treatments to shrink the tumor to non existence, to heal Sam and to give Shug and Sam strength to get through this, for you to lift their spirits and fill them with you loving and healing power and to flood his brain with your healing powers. Amen..
ReplyDeleteI am familiar with the non alcoholic and the alcoholic cirrhosis of the liver, having had friends and family with both types. It is not good for sure.
I love love love your header. Did you make that yourself? it's really great.
So sorry about your struggles. Waiting for specialists is the worst. And sometimes it's the best you can do. Let's hope he's turned a corner and will be improving steadily.
ReplyDeleteThank you so much for your candor, Shug ... not trying to airbrush details of Sam's journey. Actually, both yours and his. It's a family affair.
ReplyDeleteLifting my bold prayers right now!
Thank you for this added information. I know how to pray now!
ReplyDelete(((hugs)))
ReplyDeleteI just said prayers for Your sweet hubby and all that you two are going through.
Thank you for all of the specific information. I whole-hearted agree with your statements about being your own advocate and doing research. 5 months was so long to be able to see the specialist. Thankfully you sought help from your doctor directly.
Love you and continued prayers.
Sue
I have you two on my prayer list and I will continue to pray for both of you.
ReplyDeleteYou are brave telling us what all is going on in your journey.
This is good so we know what exactly to pray for.
I totally believe you have to be your own health advocate. Doctors can only do so much.
I am familiar with the nonalcoholic and the alcoholic cirrhosis of the liver unfortunately.
God bless you both and God get rid of that tumor!!!
I was so glad to see this post and find out the details! I had wanted to ask you, but didn't know if you were comfortable with talking about it. I have known for a few years that you can get cirrhosis with ever drinking. I don't know how or why, but it is true. I am going back to read this again and make a note of the new things to pray about. I have been praying for good doctors and total healing, but knowing the details helps with prayers so much!! Phil has had two kinds of cancer. He did radioactive seed implants for his prostate cancer.
ReplyDeletePraying for you and Sam!
ReplyDeleteMuch love and many prayers for you and Sam... prayers are truly a great blessing. Gentle hugs, Barb.
ReplyDeleteThank you for sharing these details. You are both in my prayers 🙏 ❤️
ReplyDeleteOh Shug, this is really a lot for you all to be going through, but so thankful that you know you have the very best Advocate ever, the Great Physician Jesus Christ. He will guide you and your doctors and help Sam get the very best treatment available. I am so sorry it has taken so long to get the help that was so badly needed. We don't understand these things, but then again, I am a firm believer in God's perfect timing. I pray that the specialist that you now have is the best there is to handle this situation. We will be lifting you both up in prayer during these difficult times. May God give you peace and strength and comfort for the journey. He will never leave you nor forsake you. Amen.
ReplyDeleteMany prayers for Sam and for you! Thank you for sharing your journey.
ReplyDeleteOh Shug, I am so sorry. Had no idea.
ReplyDeletePraying for the Lord to bless Sam with a miracle of total healing--not just from the cancer, but from the encephalopathy and cirrhosis as well.
Thank you for the update on Sam. I will most definitely send prayers for all those specific needs.
ReplyDeletePoor Sam, he has been through so much. I just said a quiet prayer for him and you as well, Shug, for all the things you mentioned, and to give both of you strength during this most difficult time. Sending a big hug to you on this Saturday evening, Shug.

ReplyDeleteThank you for explaining, keeping in prayer. And yes, be your own advocate.
ReplyDeleteThat is a tough road! Barb is going through something similar and you are right about being your own advocate. Sometimes you need to push the doctors.
ReplyDeleteThank you for sharing, what a road you've been on. I'm so sorry, but I will definitely keep you both in my prayers.
