Last night, we spent a meaningful evening with Sam's brother and the four granddaughters on Sam's side of the family. It was one of those evenings that wasn't fancy or loud, but it carried a lot of meaning.
We all gathered at Sam's parents' home, which is a place that holds so many echoes of laughter, Sunday dinners, and stories that have been told and re-told over the years. Sam's sweet mom passed away in 2023, and his dad, now 96, is living in a memory care facility. With hearts full of gratitude and maybe a few gently tears, we brought the girls together to go through their grandparents' belongings and take anything that held meaning to them.
There was no rush, no pressure....just a peaceful evening of sorting through treasures. The girls picked out everything from a worn domino set that had seen countless family games, to kitchen gadgets that had helped prepare meals for generations. They touched old recipe cards, looked through china cabinets, and admired the furniture that had always been a part of the background when they were growing up. They even chose some of the beautiful paintings that Sam's mom had created, each one holding a little piece of her creativity and spirit.
The evening was all about carrying their grandparents' legacy forward in their own homes and hearts. It was an evening of sorting through the belongings and honoring the lives of their grandparents.
"Legacy isn't leaving something for people. It's leaving something in people."

It's a lovely ceremony! CELEBRATION OF LIFE!
ReplyDeleteThat’s beautiful, Shug. I live in the last home my parents lived and while we have redone and gotten rid of many things in the house, I am surrounded by the memories which I find comforting. I’m extremely sentimental.
ReplyDeleteIt is not an easy job getting rid of family things, it is easier when it goes to family members that appreciate the memories!
ReplyDeleteSuch a beautiful post, Shug. So glad to know that the girls could choose what reminded them most about their beloved grandparents. Blessings!
ReplyDeleteWhat a splendid idea, Shug! That quote has touched my very being; I'm printing and adding to the Cigar Box (aka, my treasure box).
ReplyDeleteTo have something that belonged to someone you loved and was part of your history is precious. The girls must have been so happy to spend the evening with you and Sam.
ReplyDeleteWhat a beautiful and special moment - and way to carry on family legacy. Love it! Blessings on your holiday weekend ahead. xo
ReplyDeleteSounds wonderful, they all look so beautiful and Happy, just like you are.. great idea to meet and enjoy the memories together
ReplyDeleteI love this! Those are items the girls will treasure, not for monetary value but because of the love of family.
ReplyDeleteThis is wonderful! You don't know how many people we know who start fighting when they do this. Huge arguments over who wants what. Your background perfectly matches your header. Your blogs are always a changing work of art!
ReplyDeleteSuch a wonderful post - I am so glad the girls care about the items! Some kids don't you know.
ReplyDeleteYes, it’s the warm memories that count. Like you we keep building new ones.❤️
ReplyDeleteSuch a touching post today Shug. Its so meaningful to reminisce over family memories and choosing the treasures to bring home to their own families.
ReplyDeleteI love your final quote too. Its so true and meaningful.

What a very special time and evening for your family. Those are treasures that the four daughters will treasure forever. It brought back memories of when my husband's side of the family got together after his dad passed away.
ReplyDeleteSounds like a lovely evening.
ReplyDeleteWhat wonderful memories you family made!
ReplyDeleteOh, I really enjoyed your post today, Shug. It's such a special feeling going through loved ones belongings after they passed, and taking a few things that will always hold a special place in our hearts. It is an emotional time for sure, but a time that brings siblings and relatives together. I'm glad the four girls found something to take with them. The paintings that Sam's mom made sound like treasures. They all look so happy in this picture to have received a part of their loved one that will last a lifetime.

**I loved the red rose painting on your Header, so pretty.
That's exactly what Larry and I have been doing for some time now with Larry's Dad, now that he has passed. It's so Much! And we are so tired...

Sounds like a beautiful time.
ReplyDeleteWhat a blessing to be able to bring the family together to share those special moments and treasures from the past...little reminders of the things that shaped the family and brought them together for the happy times. I love this. So happy for these granddaughters who will carry on the legacy of their grandparents in their own homes and with their families. I love the continuation of family stories that will go along with the items they treasure. Our home is like a family museum, where most everything we have has a story behind it. I love it, even though there are times I'd like to "downsize" and purge out some stuff, but where do I begin? It may just have to wait for the next generation to take care of it. Thanks for this post. I love it.
