Changing Habits.....

A change in habits is certainly a task that has to be continually exercised.

Can it be done?  I think so....but it sure has to be a mind set that one is truly desiring to change!

(*^$%*):#@@%O"^*).....ARGH!  This is day two of NO SUGAR in my system!  NONE, NADA....meaning zero!  Am I grouchy?  I think so!

I'm admitting here, that I have been a sugar addict for some 30 or more years.....and I can fully fill the negative responses that my body is trying to relate to me.

Hurting, aching, retaining fluids, being moody, having a somewhat sluggish feeling all the time.. ........these harmful effects, caused by too much sugar in my system.... is making me feel so bad.

I'm cleaning up my pig pen diet (meaning - filthy eating habits)
and hoping to replace the sugar foods...AND...foods that are processed!

So....I'm starting....by trying to eat more ROOT vegetables.  Good healthy foods like sweet potatoes, carrots, turnips, beets, and even parsnips!!

Believe it or not...I had no clue what a parsnip was until recently!
I bought them...but, I have not cooked them yet!  lol.

Hope they are tasty!

In the past....a change in diet has always been about weight!
NOT THIS TIME.  Now don't get me wrong...if I shed a few pounds, I won't mind.....However, I am just hoping to get my A1C level down...as well as feel better!

It sure saddens me to think of all the horrible junk that we are feeding kids these days!  Fast Foods, Processed Foods, Sweets, and those flavored drinks!!

When it comes down to it....it is all about CHOICE!  Good foods or bad foods.

Hugs to each of you,
Shug

  2. I love parsnips!! The trouble with me is the laziness... processed foods are so much easier. Such a copout. Shug, one of my daughter's friends has been eating whole, unprocessed foods for the last few years and she is amazingly different in her health and weight, too. Her blog is on my side bar, Real Food - Real Family. I'm trying to get myself psyched to cut off the processed/easy way outs. Good luck to you, my friend! blessings ~ tanna

  3. Hi Shug!

Getting healthy is such a priority . . . like you, I am trying to get healthy, not necessarily skinny! You are starting out right with root veggies - I love parsnips, beets and sweet potatoes, yum! Good luck with your new eating plan, maybe we can cheer each other on!!

I love the picture of the "shark" cloud! My, you have beautiful clouds in Texas!

  4. best wishes on your new healthy eating!! I roast parsnips, it caramelize the edges and I like them a lot better that way,,
I agree we have been feeding our kids badly but I think they are much more educated than we are in this area now,,, I try to not buy food in boxes, only in its natural form, fruit vegies, nuts, I try to keep it simple,,its not always the way but mostly, Garry is diabetic, just in the last few years so its hard, he is a sugar junkie,,, and its so addicting,, me too but not as bad as he is, my guilty pleasure is potato chips, everytime, lol, his is chocolate, neither one is good for us!!

  5. Shug, my daughter dices up the root vegetables, then adds some EVOO and rosemary and tosses them around, then pops them in the oven on a baking sheet until cooked. The flavors all come out fabulous!

  6. Hi Sweetie, As you know, your problem is MINE too. I struggled with my blood sugar and my weight for WAY too many years.. FINALLY, in 2011---I put a REAL priority on this problem. Since then, I am healthier than I've been in many years... I still eat what I want --and some things such as FRIED scallops and shrimp may not be good for me. BUT--I'm not going to feel guilty for eating what I want any longer. In the olden days, when I would go OFF program --I'd never seem to get back on. NOW--when I eat something I shouldn't, I write it down and then make up for it the next few days. This works for me --but I HAVE to continue writing everything I eat down and admitting to myself what I put in my big ole mouth.... ha ha.... Works for me --and I certainly like myself much better these days than I did when food was in charge of me instead of me being in charge of the food.... GOOD Luck....

    Hugs,
    Betsy

  7. I do worry about kids these days --because of all of the processed foods and the junk food and the fast-food... It's easy---and busy families just take that route since it's so easy.. BUT--they are not good for any of us....

    Hugs again,
    Betsy

  8. Fresh food is key! No soda around here and mostly fresh items. The change will help you feel so much better, but it will take time! Stick with it!

  9. Shug-
I read you loud and clear!
I didn't know you had a problem with your A1C.
Last year-- (June will be one year for me) I was given a diagnosis of T2 Diabetes. Yuck! I wasn't happy. But, I knew it was coming, first with genetics, then with my own out of control eating.
Still in one year-- I've not gone off sugar completely. Oh I need to-- but I have not.
I wish you the very best in doing this...grouchy or not! Once you get past it; your temperment will even out, I betcha!
I'm inspired by your writing this... I want so badly to get my A1C down and get off the meds.
    Thanks for sharing it .
