All About Labels....

Surely in this big world that we live in, filled with
so much technology, there is another way!!

Another way to grocery shop, without having to read
every single label....but yet, benefit from the most nutritious
items...I guess we just need to go FRESH.

While being on this fast, I have learned so very much about the contents in the foods that I normally purchase without giving it a thought.....Take sugar for example....It is very difficult to find anything that does not contain SUGAR.

The label may not read Sugar....but there are plenty of other words like fructose, cane syrup, corn syrup,  syrup, etc, etc, etc. that are the tell tell signs that our diet is full of sugars!

And how about Sodium.....Salt if you will!
Just take a look at this label...310 mg of sodium and this is
just from one can.  The fast that we are on calls for "Sea Salt"
only.  This limits a whole lot of foods!
No Salt, No Sugar!!

There it is....Corn syrup!  Of course, we all know that the sweeteners are what makes all this food so tasty!

Honestly speaking....having to stop and read labels is very annoying for me....I do want to cook healthy, but I am just like most of you....I don't have time to spend three hours at the grocery store...

We are eating healthier right now and we are doing without all those sugars and salts....Sam and I both feel better, but it definitely requires a lot of work to eat right.  Just take for example...I have been drinking coconut milk this past week...
This is something that I would never have thought of doing before we started this fast.  And, I must say it is very good!!
I want my approach to food to become more about the benefits, rather than the taste.

Are you a label reader?  Do you have a better way of feeding your family healthy foods?  I'd love to hear about them....

Have a Blessed Day...
Shug

  1. What an informative and interesting post. I do read labels, though never in the store. I'd never get out :-). I also am a brand loyal person, so once I've made a choice I tend to stick to it. I hope you had a great weekend and are looking forward to the week ahead. Have a great day. Blessings...Mary

  2. Reading labels can surely make me crazy!! As far as what I do -- I use fresh things as I can get them -- then frozen. We stay away from processed foods as much as possible.

  4. I'm a label reader! I've been known to get lost in the store for a couple hours...reading labels lol
It is amazing though how many things are added to our food that we don't realize! Good for you for eating healthy!

  5. I agree, Shug... It's hard... Once we eat something which is supposed to be good for us, then they come out and tell us that it is not good for us....

Remember when Carb Free came out??? People were so excited to get away from the carbs. BUT--what did they do?? They did take out the carbs --but they added SUGAR, in some cases lots of sugar....

Now--you can get Sugar Free stuff ---but they added back in lots of carbs and SODIUM.... Can't win, can we?

The key is to eat FRESH stuff and stay away from all processed foods...

    Good Luck, Shug.
    Hugs,
    Betsy

  6. Hi, Shug, I just happened upon your blog, and see that you are reading labels! I have been down that route for years, and then end up getting a little lazy about it. I haven't read up on your blog, so don't know what kinda fast you are doing, but I commend you on your eating healthier efforts! I need to get back on this sugar free wagon, myself! So I am going to follow you and see if you help my endurance against the love of the Cookie Monster in me!
    Blessings,
    Susie

  7. Sure shootin' Honey.

I'm one of those gals who pause in the isle blockin' traffic to read the labels. These days ya gotta!

It's amazin' that they are even allowed to call most items 'food'. If I can't pronounce it, I try not to eat it! Heeehehehe!

You go girl, I'm so proud your livin' the healthy life there.

God bless and have an extraordinary day sweetie!!! :o)

  8. I have heard to only buy foods around the outer edge of the grocery store. Also not to buy anything our great grandmothers wouldn't have bought. BUT, with our busy lives this is just not possible unless we stay at home all the time and don't have much else to do. Either lots of salt or lots of sugar is in everything!!! You are really doing a good job of this and taking it seriously, way to go, Shug!!! And you may be able to teach us all some things after it is over. By the way, after it is over, to you have any plans to go get a big hot fudge sundae??

  9. I do read labels - not all of them and not that I follow them - lol.

I 'm glad you are feeling better.

    So coconut milk tastes good?

  10. Yes, I'm a label reader. Usually I'm really careful, too. (Except the past two days when I've been on an emotional eating misadventure. Back on track now)

I do agree that the best thing is to keep food as SIMPLE as possible and stay as far away as you can from processed food.

  11. Oh, I do read labels and try so hard to stay away from processed foods. While I'm successful a majority of the time I have succumbed when tired or pressed for time. Eating fresh is just about the only way to stay away from all the additives and toxins. While it may seem hard at first I'll bet it becomes easier as you do it each day. But I'm certainly not there yet, tho I keep trying. Hang in there, Shug! I'm so happy that you're doing this fast. Can't wait to read about your stellar results and if you will incorporate this new way of eating for good.

  12. I could probably win the contest for most unhealthy eater. I know better, but fail to follow what I know. I usually don't read labels. Looking at what I just typed,I know I need to change my ways.

  13. I am trying to be SO careful about what I feed this little family of mine...we go off track once in a while (that would be my fault since I'm the shopper), but I just can't eat anything over processed. It makes me sick, literally.
I loved this post, thanks so much for sharing :) xo

  14. Yep--we read labeels in this house for various reasons. It gets a little scary sometimes. Fresh and frozen are the best!

  15. I'm just starting to read labels too. I find most of the stuff I want to eat either has too many grams fat or carbs!
    Good luck with your fast!

  16. I used to read labels and found it pretty depressing. I try to buy food that is fresh as much as possible and stay away from processed foods. Well, except for these hot dogs that I dearly love! But, hey, it says they are all beef!
    Have a good week!

  17. This is a terrific post and I love your photo captions.

I started reading labels about 5 years ago which lead to me buy significantly less packaged foods-- There's so much junk in them.

I try to cook large batches and freeze portions for easier cooking at a later date. I generally only cook for my husband and I so that makes it a bit easier.

  18. Hi Shug!

I try to read labels - I know that there is such good wisdom in reading them - thank you for the encouragement!!

I love coconut milk - but I don't like milk! And coconut milk has way more calcium in it, so it's always on my list! Eating right is so hard, but such an important thing to do!

Thank you for your kinds words and prayers - I love my blogging friends!

    Hugs,
    Barb

  19. I read when I'm trying to eat healthier... there are times I am NOT. LOL! Right now, I'm just circling the outside of the store... fresh. Seems to be where the healthiest choices live WITHOUT having to read, which annoys me. ;) blessings ~ Tanna

  20. Great post and good advice - to read labels! By now I've read so many labels and know what to avoid. We're still into fresh and home-made - like soups - which I then freeze in portions. Blessings to you!
