Waterfall Whispers and a Hodgepodge

Waterfall Whispers and a Hodgepodge

 1. What's one piece of advice you would you give a recent or soon-to-be graduate?

You do not have to have your whole life figured out the minute you walk across that stage.  Many people think graduation means you are suddenly supposed to know exactly who you are, what career you want, where you will live, and what comes next.  Real life rarely works this way..  Give yourself permission to grow into your future.

2. May 15th marks the birth date of L. Frank Baum, author of The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. At this point in time are you more in need of brains, courage, heart, or a trip back home? Explain.

Oh...the cowardly lion!!  He spent the entire journey believing he lacked courage, when in truth, courage had been inside him all along. I know that I already have the courage to walk the road I am now on....  Courage is choosing to move forward even when fear is sitting beside you.

3.  "There's no place like home" is an oft repeated line from Baum's book. When was the last time you felt the truth of that statement?

Honestly, anytime I return home after being gone for several days, I feel it. I may enjoy the trip, the restaurants, the visiting, and all the excitement, but there is something comforting about pulling into my own driveway. Home is where my favorite chair sits, where familiar smells linger, and where I can completely exhale. Nothing quite compares to sleeping in your own bed and waking up surrounded by the little everyday things you love most.

4. May is National BBQ Month...do you own a grill? Who does the grilling at your house? What's your favorite thing to throw on the grill? What's the last thing you grilled?

Oh yes...we own a grill, a smoker, and a pellet grill.  These are all NEW since last year, and have never been used.  Sam has always done the outdoor cooking but has not felt well enough to do so.  I enjoy burgers as well as ribs and brisket.  HMMM... not sure I can remember the last thing that was cooked on the old grills.

5. What's a memory you replay in your head when you need a little joy?

One memory I replay often is the sound of my grandkids laughing and playing outdoors.  These moments still warm my heart.  I have a digital picture frame that rotates photos (all day long)...Goodness...each time I walk past it and I see the old photos of the kids growing up, memories pop up.  I sometimes carry those memories with me for the rest of the day.

6. Insert your own random thought here.

My random thought this morning is about a picture that I recently took.  The sound of the water tumbling over the rocks made the world fill a little less loud while I was standing there enjoying the fall and the roses.  Places like this are so peaceful and as I watched the water flowing over the rocks without hurrying, I couldn't help but think how the rocks themselves, have sat there through storms and all kinds of seasons that change over and over again.  They just are!!  Yet...everyday, they bring smiles to faces over and over again.

This little corner of beauty feels like a reminder to me that life does not always have to be at full-speed.  Just keep a smile on your face and keep moving.

Happy Hodgepodge Day....

  1. I know when I was done with school I had no idea what I was going to do with my life. That is fantastic advice for graduates.
I hope you get to use the new grills and smoker soon.
I can just imagine the sound from the water tumbling over the rocks. So peaceful! What a beautiful spot!

  3. I know I'd love hearing that flowing water while looking at the beautiful roses, Shug. You gave those grads some sage advice, too. Prayers and blessings!

  4. That picture of the waterfall and the red roses just made my day, Shug. It's so pretty, and looks like a peaceful place to be for a time. Home is really the best place, and it was nice to hear you enjoy returning home after a trip too. I loved your answer to number 2, Shug. You really do have courage with the journey you are on now. You inspire us every day with your courage, faith, and hope. You are a blessing in my life. : )

  5. Everything you shared so eloquently, I agree with.It takes supernatural, Divine courage for navigating the deep, dark valley of Sam's cancer. Continue to let God lead you through it.

Oh pretty water feature. We have a waterfall and pond in our backyard but we sprang a leak so without flooding the patio, we're unable to use it until my husband fixes it. The sound of the water is so soothing and brings in so many birds.

For years I did all the grilling because I had to, if we wanted burgers or BBQ chicken. I still enjoy grilling. My husband tends to burn the meat. 🔥

  6. Goodness, even that photo looks peaceful. It is gorgeous! And the way you describe it, even more peaceful. Hold onto that photo...for a day when you really need some extra peace:) Hope Sam will feel well enough to do some grilling one day soon.

  7. Too many people see university as the pinnacle and don't consider what might come thereafter.

  9. We added a waterfall to our backyard a little over a year ago and we love it so much. It is so peaceful and the perfect place to relax. I can hear it from any porch which is a bonus. I'm sorry your hubs is having a difficult time and will add him to my prayers this week as I see you have a lot of medical appointments, etc. God knows our every need and I pray yours are met this week as you move forward with courage in the midst of your fear. Take care.

  10. Your words Shug, are like the sound of the water rushing over the rocks. Very soothing and encouraging.
Our gas grill died many years ago and we never replaced it. Both of us love BBQ and the flavors of things grilled. Our son and grand son in law have taken over that "job" and we get to EAT the final product...
Great advice to the graduates ... my sentiments exactly too.
I totally agree on there being no place like home. I love to travel and see new sights and taste new foods but Ahh, a snuggle down in "My Chair" with a special something to nosh on is about as good as it can get !
    Continued prayers

  11. Your photo with the waterfall over the rocks and the roses is beautiful. I like your application of how those rocks just are, how they have endured so much. Excellent word picture!

  14. I love waterfalls and that was a gorgeous photo with the reds. I too have a picture frame that shows all the photos and I have to stop and look as well. I wish we did grill more but we don't. And I feel like you - there is no place like home - I like that DOrothy learned that.

  15. What an image ... I can almost feel the spray on my face. You're so blessed, having it near!
What you said about Courage reminds me of a quote someone sent me years ago: "Courage is looking fear right in the eye and saying, "Get the hell out of my way; I've got things to do."

  18. Hello dear Friend! You always have such lovely words of wisdom. I love the grill and we have a traeger wood smoker grill and love it! Matt does a lot of it too - but I did it all on my own before he was in my life. Very easy to use. And I'm with you - when I'm home from a trip I feel the same way. Blessings to you and Sam! xo
