A Stare from the Supervisor

I have to share this little fellow with you....a sweet snapshot borrowed from a friend who caught him right in the middle of his day.

I'm not a huge fan of squirrels, but if this face doesn't make you smile, I don't know what will.  My reason for not being a fan?  The little boogers like to eat the wires on my hanging lights in the back yard.  Plus..they are a rodent of sort.

I mean… look at him.

That is not just a squirrel.

He is a supervisor.

He’s sitting there like,

"Are you going to take that picture, or are you just going to stand there?”

Spring has officially arrived when the squirrels come out acting like they own everything—and honestly, they kind of do. They’ve been cooped up all winter, and now they’re back with a plan… or at least a whole lot of energy and absolutely no fear.

They run across fences like Olympic athletes, leap from tree to tree like they’ve got something to prove, and then suddenly stop—right in the middle of everything—to eat a snack like they’ve earned it.

And you know what? Maybe they have.

This one in particular looks like he’s been very busy…

  • Reorganizing his acorn inventory
  • Supervising the neighborhood
  • Judging everyone who walks by

And let’s not ignore the way he’s holding that nut—like it’s a five-star meal.

Meanwhile, the rest of us are out here juggling schedules, making lists, and trying to remember why we walked into a room… and he’s just living his best life on the side of a tree.

No stress.

No deadlines.

Just snacks and attitude.

Spring does that though—it brings everything back to life… including a little bit of personality we didn’t know we needed. Even if that personality comes in the form of a slightly judgmental squirrel with great balance.

So today, I’m taking a page out of his book…

Handle your business.

Take your snack breaks seriously.

And if necessary… sit still and stare at people like you’re in charge.

Apparently, this is the secret to life.

💛

Shug....

  1. This looks like a grey squirrel, but he could be a red one. I love watching them. Except they zig zag all over the road so it is hard to not hit them when driving! When I was a kid, I wanted a pet so bad that I let a squirrel into the house. My mom freaked out and chased it through the house with a broom, nightgown flying behind her and yelling at me the whole time. They do chew our power lines and have caused power outages. Ginny

  2. Ginny, this makes me laugh. I can just see your mom running all through the house with the broom trying to get that squirrel out. Hopefully, you did not get in trouble. The Little Rascals can be so fast though

  3. I do not like them. They eat baby bird nests and eat all the birdseed they can hold. We have way too many in our yard.

    1. Same here Connie...They eat all my bird seed no matter how many different kinds of feeders I buy, they seem to figure out a way.

  4. Shug ... I love that page from your book. I think I am going to use it too. Life can be crazy sometimes.
The squirrels are doing their Springtime dancing around here too. They use our roofs as their highway routes and the trees to take their flying leaps around the yard. The fences between us and our neighbors really show their skills as acrobats. How they balance on the top of the boards is beyond me. They are sometimes fun to watch but they ARE Rodents and not my favorite.
Have a restful day after all the prom activities.

    1. They use our fence as well to travel from one yard to the next...A couple of years ago, Sam had to rehang my lights on poles that they could not climb. Sadly, it seems that one gets run over on the road in front of us....at least every other week...I'm surprised we still have so many..

  5. Hahaha! We have lots of squirrels here and enjoy watching them. It's amazing how they run across the trees and can make it a far distance without ever touching the ground. They may be rodents, but they are cute ones!

    1. We like to watch them as they chase each other round and round on the tree trunks. I'm not sure where they all come from, but we have way too many...Guess thats what having pecan trees in the yard does..brings em in.

  6. Ha Ha Ha ... oh my I loved this. It is so true.
Our problem are the young squirrel, juvenile delinquents I call them. They root up all my pots, pull plants out, make a mess of my potted plant displays and more. Ha!

  7. "... stare at people like you're in charge." That's cute! The squirrels run right in front of my bike tires on my morning rides. They tend to be sorta suicidal around here.

    1. first of all, I'm impressed that you do bike rides. I have no luck riding bikes.. A broken nose and a broken collar bone is what I've ended up with when riding bikes. You wonder why with all the yards and trees they have, why they try to cross the pathways or roads.

  8. I love THAT squirrel - he is really beautiful. Looks red to me. I used to like squirrels - however they got into our attic and we fought them for years. We had flashing changed, the chimney repaired, traps set and we would catch them and take them miles away to release them - spent a fortune too. No more squirrels for me.

    1. Oh goodness Sandie...I've heard of this happening before and even chewing through the wiring in the attic. What a mess..

  9. His best life .... yes! I do believe you could be a best-selling children's book author, featuring that Boss Hog squirrel!
Seeing Barbara's comment makes me realize, one of these days I'm going to drive off the road and into gosh knows what while trying to avoid the squirrels.

    1. He does look like he is completely content. Hey..thats a good thought and a great title. Makes me so sad to see them being hit and just laying out on the road... The buzzards are so quick to enjoy themselves a big meal though.

  13. I've always found squirrels entertaining but I've heard of all the trouble they can cause. Since I've never had issues with them, I still like them.

    1. Yes ...they can get in your attic or garage and cause a lot of havoc. They can be cute, but they can also be very much a headache.

  14. Hey, Shug! A transformer went down. A day with no power is so hard; I would make a terrible pioneer woman. I still suspect a squirrel is behind it all.

  15. Squirrels can be so entertaining! I've been busy pulling up oak tree sprouts caused by acorns buried and forgotten last fall.

    1. Oh Kathy...those little sprouts can be so troubling. One year we had so many of those sprouts that they covered an area of our backyard.... and they actually hurt your feet if you walk on them barefoot.

  16. Shug, this is a delightful picture your friend took. As you know, I don't like the squirrels mainly because I'm a bit afraid of them. They are so fast and scurry about on my lawn every day. You would think I've gotten used to them by now. A blog friend once said they are rats with tails, and I had to laugh. And my neighbor told me once that they can fly! haha. I'm so glad you appreciate them more than I do. They are a part of nature, and have been around much longer than I have. Your words are delightful on here today about the squirrel. ; )

    1. I did remember when I was writing this post that you are scared of the things. I would appreciate it if they would stay in my neighbors yards, but I'm thinking I'm just going to have to deal with them.

  17. Aww! How adorable! I am not a fan of squirrels either and I don't know why, they are very cute but it might be because they are too clever and do act like the own everything. lol

  18. Shug, this post had me laughing :) We love watching the squirrels. We put out corn for the deer and the squirrels eat it. We put bird seed in the feeders and the squirrels devour it. But...it's entertaining to say the least. They run and climb and act like unruly children, but the birds still show up and the deer and bunnies too, so the more the merrier :)

  19. That is a great shot of the squirrel, and your post made me chuckle. Although I probably would not be chuckling if I lived in a house and had them chewing up my wires and eating all the seeds I put out for the birds.
