A few hours Well-Spent

Yesterday, I spent a few hours in a place where joy felt like sunlight and it was wrapping itself around every heart in the room.

I had the privilege of visiting my niece (Tammy) at the home where she lives.  This wasn't just my everyday visit though...it was a very special visit.  You may remember me sharing about her in earlier posts, how at a young age she suffered a brain injury, and how life, in it's twist and turns, led her to this Christ-centered community just six miles from my front door.

What a blessing this place has been, not only for her, but for our entire family. It is a haven where adults with mild to moderate intellectual and developmental disabilities are seen, loved and celebrated in big ways. The care is exceptional and the facilities are beautiful.  What struck me most yesterday was the heart behind it all. These people (The staff) don't just meet needs....they lift spirits and nourish confidence in the residents. They pour love into everyday life in ways that feels like grace in motion.

Yesterday was definitely one of those grace-filled days. I was invited to a special "Say Yes to the Dress" event.  It was an afternoon set aside for the ladies to choose a dress for the upcoming "Night to Shine," which is a prom-style celebration hosted by Tim Tebow. Their big night is scheduled for February 13, 2026, and I will have to tell you that yesterday, the sparkle in the room was already brighter than stunning sequins on satin.

Racks of dresses, all donated by generous young women and ladies from our community, stood waiting like treasures. Lace, glittering silver, pastels, shimmering gowns, it was all there.  BUT...the real beauty wasn't hanging on the racks, NO, it was dancing in the smiles of the women trying them on.

And Tam.....

She found one! A gorgeous maroon velvet dress that hugged her beautifully and made her eyes shine so big. I need to take it in (Not me, but the lady that does alterations for me) at the shoulders and hem the length, but that's a simple fix for something that made her feel like royalty. She looked like dignity dressed in velvet.

Every women deserves to feel lovely.

Every women deserves to feel seen.

And yesterday, I watched a room full of them bloom.

If you ever wonder if small acts matter...like making donations, volunteering, showing up, reaching out to help those in need, Please know that they do. Someone's dress became Tammy's confidence.  Someone's kindness became a room full of laughter and happiness.

I left that home smiling and very grateful.  I am so excited for these young ladies (and the men) who will experience a "Night to Shine."

Loves,

Shug

    1. We are so very Blessed for Tammy to have such a great Community to live in. I wish I could share the facilities on here (against the rules) but it is such a beautiful place to live...they have their own Big chapel, a candle shop, a huge center for hosting events (state of the art) and classrooms. Each resident has their own room which is decorated the way they choose to decorate it.

  4. I hope Tammy will enjoy the build-up to her big night as much as the event itself.

  5. Thank you for sharing Tammy and her dress with us. I love this, and I remember all the fun she had at last year's event. This is truly a blessing.
And an answer about our snow, it will last until spring, usually April. One year we had snow piles until May 18th, our youngest son's birthday.
It is snowing today. :-) We already have another inch!

  7. Shug, you brought tears to my eyes. The Night to Shine is such a wonderful thing. I have helped serve dinner to the wonderful people that attended a special night very similar to Tim Tebows. I know I was blessed even more than those I served.
Tammy's dress is lovely and you can see how much it affected her. Royalty for sure.

  8. How wonderful! Sadly, places like this seem to be so rare. But it is so wonderful that she is there, and so close to you. It really is a God given thing. I hope you post again at the prom!

  9. I loved this. I worked with the mildly mentally handicap children (teenagers) for years. I love them. I am glad she is in such a GREAT place. IT is always a worry for parents where they will go.
She is beautiful and her dress is gorgeous. I know she will have a fantastic time.

  11. Tammy looks lovely in her new velvet dress. Velvet is one of the prettiest fabrics. I like the little brooch in the center. So good of the community to donate all of these wonderful dresses. They will be appreciate by many, and make it a special night for them to always remember. The pink background with the balloons and snowflakes is pretty too.

  19. What a wonderful thing to do. She looks beautiful in that dress. My daughter in law sponsered a free prom dress giveaway this year for girls in the area who couldn't afford to buy a prom dress. Amazing what a dress can do for a girls self esteem
