When Your Legs Throw a Midnight Dance Party.

Oh sweet Friday!!  you are the glorious gateway to the weekend! I can already feel the weekend waving at me!!  ..... Of course, if you're home every day, does the weekend really matter? Oh, YES it does. The weekend feels different. For two days, my house is filled with laughter coming from all my kiddos.  My back door is like a revolving door on the weekends.  Plus, this time of the year, there are all the festivals and such that we try to add to these busy days.  OH yes...and antique shopping is high on the list as well.

So here we are, standing on the verge of the weekend, smiling at the thought of what's to come....fun plans, extra food, and MAYBE a little rest some where in between all of the running around.  Speaking of rest, let's talk about something that doesn't always cooperate when bedtime rolls around:  RESTLESS LEG SYNDROME.   Have any of you ever experienced this?

Ever have those nights when you're ready to call it a day, you finally crawl into bed, and just when you close your eyes, your legs decide it's time to dance??  That jittery, tingly, can't-stay-still feeling that keeps you flipping, flopping and sighing until midnight......HELLO, restless leg syndrome.

I have had way too many of these kind of nights.  I change positions over and over again and sometimes I have to have some serious PEP TALKS with my legs, but NO...they've got other plans.

If you have ever experienced this, then you know how frustrating it can be. What helps you calm those restless legs?  For me, it's a hot bath in epson salt, magnesium, and taking iron with ferritin.  I've heard that drinking tonic water helps as well, but I've just not tried this YET.

Carbonated water is not something I really enjoy, but it's worth trying!

I hope that not one of you ever experience this, but if you do, I would love for you to share what helps you.  BTW....mine comes and goes!! I may have this issue for a few weeks, and then suddenly, I don't see it's ugliness for a few months.

As Friday winds down and the weekend tiptoes in, I am sending you all good vibes for a peaceful weekend and one that fills your journal with wonderful memories..

Shug....💛💛💛💛

PS:  I have decided to try my best to reply to each comment that you all leave on my post each day.  So many times questions are asked and it seems that I just leave you hanging.  I want to reply to your wonderful comments.  So please, if you get a chance, circle back and read my replies.  Love you all.

  1. I don't think it's RLS, but I often enjoy (not!) leg cramps in the wee hours. It's not pretty the things I tell ol' Charlie Horse.
I'm not fond of carbonated beverages either, but really like lime-flavored Diet Tonic water.

    1. I don't every have leg cramps...just the creepy, crawlee feelings.. I'm going to try the tonic water...may have to force it down.

  2. Restless Leg Syndrome is not fun! I have fibromyalgia, so RLS is no stranger to me, but I am thankful that, like you, it isn't a constant thing. Warm baths with Epsom salts is where I turn.

    1. I'm on a facebook group where many people have this all the time...even in their arms. I am so thankful that if I have to battle it, that it comes and goes...

  3. I do sympathise with you. It is a misery when it occurs, but I don't have often enough to try different remedies.
I've had cramp all my life. I try to keep well hydrated and stretch as much as I can. I tell myself there are far worse things in life and I really don't mind stamping round the bedroom in the wee, small hours. 😉

    1. True.... There a so many things that are worse than even having RLS. I just get so frustrated because either doctors just don't know what to do, or they think it's all in our heads..

  4. Hello, knock on wood, I do not have restless leg syndrome.
I do have a pain in my left foot right now that is causing me troubles.
Enjoy our weekend my dear friend.

    1. Thankful you nor any of my friends have issues with this. Foot pain can be very painful. Many years ago, I had plantar fasiciitis and I thought it would never go away. There was only one pair of shoes I could wear and even sometimes those hurt.

  5. Thankfully I don't have RLS when I go to bed but I really have a lot when I'm in the recliner in the evening. I do think magnesium and sparkling water do help. Tonic water has the mag. in it but its so bitter to my taste. Hydration is the best.
Your weekends sound like so much fun.
This week has been busy for a change and tomorrow (Sat.) is the Celebration of Life for my friend Lynne. Both Dave and myself have been asked to speak at it. I'm a bit nervous since its been a very long time since I have done much public speaking. At least we will be among friends. Its hard to believe its been a month since she passed. Prayers appreciated and enjoy your time with family and antique hunting.

    1. Certainly will be saying a prayer for you Sue and for all of you as you celebrate her life. This is a difficult task especially when you are close to the person who's life you are celebrating. I do need to drink more water...

  6. Thank you for this reminder, as I usually never return to a post once I have read it. Now I will with yours if I have asked you something. Phil has this syndrome once in awhile. It scares me that I will be kicked or hit! We heard to put a cake of soap under the covers by your feet. We asked our doctor about this. she had not heard of it, but said it can't hurt to try.

    1. I do not go back to a post very often, but I do want to be able to answer a question if someone asks. I have heard about the soap...guess I need to try it.

  7. Thankfully for me, I don't have this issue, Shug, and I'm so sorry to hear that you do from time to time. Hope someone can suggest something that they know will help you with this struggle. Blessings, my friend!

    1. This is one thing that Doctor's do not take Seriously. I think that if they had this issue themselves, or one of their loved ones had it, they might try to understand a little better.. Of course, I would not wish this on anyone..

    2. Sadly, our doctors let us down too much these days. Maybe, it's the law suit lurking in the corner that spooks them.

  8. Funny you should mention Restless Leg Syndrome, because shortly before bedtime last night my legs decided they wanted to dance! I shook them around for 20 minutes while watching the news, and I fell asleep easily (this time).

There's no rhyme or reason to my issues, but I've found it seems to be worse in warm weather. When the problem is really bad, I'll use a pillow between my legs or go somewhere where I can stretch out in strange positions (like legs completely perpendicular to my body).

    1. good advice...I think the longer I just lay there in one position, the worse it gets. I need to get up and move..

    2. I don't have that particular problem, but I hope yours goes away soon! I do sleep with a pillow between my legs for other reasons. It helps a lot.

    3. thank you. makes good sense that a pillow might work!

  9. Both my husband and I experience restless leg. I’d say his, is worse and more like restless “kicks” I read some remedies that work for some this one worked until the keg outsmarted him. He wore socks or just one sock for awhile and it did seem to work but not anymore. Now for me, I mostly get it in the leg where I had knee replacement - if it’s really bugging me I use a spray called bio- freeze and it numbs it so I can at least get to sleep. 💤

I know you’ll have a fan- tast- ic weekend.

  10. Thanks Debby.. I'm going to get some bio freeze.. It is worth a try for sure. happy weekend to you guys!!

  11. Well Shug, that is one thing I think I do not have. But I am wondering if soaking in magnesium makes it better - have about a magnesium supplement. I take one each day. It is for muscles.

  13. Praying for your good health and for all your family.

I love antique shopping. I once went and found Grandpa there. I took him back home and Grandma was angry. She said she took him there to be sold that very morning!

    God bless.

  14. I have RLS. Mine will start in the evening when I'm sitting on the couch watching tv. Nothing worse that having to keep my legs moving to make it stop. I take a prescription for it. One little pill at bedtime and it stops. Off the top of my head I can't think of what the name of it is. It's a big long, hard to pronounce name.

  15. Shug, I have it occasionally, but not as often as I used to. Now I have what's known as "I'm turning 60 and I toss and turn, can't sleep, go to the bathroom 4 times before waking up at 4 am!" Not fun either :)

  16. What a great description of that frustrating, jittery feeling. "When Your Legs Throw a Midnight Dance Party" is the perfect way to describe Restless Leg Syndrome. It is so disruptive when all you want to do is settle down.

I love that you still feel the unique excitement of the weekend, even while being home every day. Having your kids fill the house with laughter and the constant revolving door of company, plus the anticipation of festivals and antique shopping, definitely makes those two days special.

It is interesting that you have found success with the combination of a hot bath with Epsom salts, magnesium, and iron with ferritin. That seems like a very holistic approach. I've also heard of the tonic water suggestion, often associated with its quinine content.

I really appreciate you encouraging your community to share their own remedies. That's such a valuable thing to do for anyone dealing with this. I am sending you peaceful vibes for a weekend free of any midnight dance parties.

  17. My Mother had restless legs syndrome it was no fun. The DR put her on Gabapentin for it. Hope you find something that works Shug...are THC gummies legal in Texas...if they are I would sure try them or CBD drops:)

  18. I hate RLS. I don't have it as often since I quit taking Trazodone. Seems it was making it worse. I still have it occasionally when I can't go to sleep. Hope you find something that helps. I would take a hot shower and that helped some.

  19. Oh, I've heard of people having this at night. Don't know any remedies, but I do know that magnesium is good to calm the joints and nerves and helps muscles to relax. I hope it gets better for you in the days ahead, Shug. I do get leg cramps from time to time, and they can be so painful. I have to take a hot shower when it happens. Seems that hot water helps with the cramping. I love antique shopping! It would be so nice to spend the day with you, browsing through all the antique shops. : )

  20. I often come back to blogs to see if the conversations and comments are going back and forth. As for the leg thing, not had that but know many who have. One person puts a bar of opened soap at the bottom of their bed for it.
