MUMS!!

 Good morning!!

My topic today?  If you guessed TEXAS Homecoming mums, then you guessed right!!

Yes... Homecoming is a BIG deal around here at the High School Football games!!  And so are Homecoming MUMS!  I know I have blogged about this before (like last year) but, since this is Mylee's Senior Year, I wanted to add this to my blog book that I have printed each year.  This is a wonderful way to record your memories...

Kennedy and Mylee Jo
(Kennedy is MJ's best friend)

The famous Senior "Painted White Overalls"

This is the highlight of the Fall Football season!! It's not just another Friday night football game...Oh no!!!!  Homecoming is the the "EVENT" of the season.
The excitement starts long before kickoff, with ribbons, lots of glitter, cowbells, Painted overalls, and the biggest mums you can find.

Actually, the Homecoming mums are the heart of it all..  No joke!  Even bigger than the football game itself.
Each mum is a one of a kind masterpiece with personalized names, charms, flashing lights, cow bells and trinkets.
The girls wear them on their shoulder or around their neck, and the guys sport a smaller version of a mum (called a garter) on their arms.

The seniors.....the Kings and Queens of school pride.  They are dressed in their traditional white overalls or white pants, perfected painted with team colors and slogans.  On this day, they are living the symbols of school spirit.

My Favorite Senior!!! ๐Ÿงก๐Ÿงก๐Ÿงก

These mums are certainly not cheap!!  As crazy as it might sound, these things sell anywhere from
 ๐Ÿ’ธ๐Ÿ’ธ to ๐Ÿ’ธ๐Ÿ’ธ๐Ÿ’ธ

I have made hundreds of them in the past (when I had my flower shop)
I made them for all of our grandkids when they were in High School...and my grandsons girlfriends...
They are so much fun to make.

The game was last night and BH won the game 13 to 0.  This is a big WOO HOO to win the Homecoming game!!
Tonight will be the Homecoming Dance.  Excited for these Kiddos!!

  1. Wow, we do not have anything like that here for our homecomings. But then again there is nothing like Texas High School football! I can't even begin to imagine how many hours went into making those.

    1. When I had my flower shop way back in the day, I worked on these things for weeks prior to homecoming. The last homecoming I did, I made 109 of them.. Woo!!!

    1. Mine as well. A simple fresh flower mum with about 6 ribbons is what we had...plus a cowbell.

    1. Oh yes Mari...they are BIG here in TEXAS. Lots of money can be made from selling them but they are sure a headache if you have a lot of orders.

  4. I remember those Homecoming mums! (Back in '68, however, they were LOTS smaller.)
Texas football ... there's nothing like it!

    1. True!! I think for kids these days, it's more about the ribbons and the trinkets.

  6. when I graduated High school, 1962, mums were huge at the homecoming game but hey were simply a big MUM with ribbons, normal ribbons. these are masterpieces. I was too poor to have a mum, in fact most of our class was and that makes me wonder if this is the same, only a few can afford to have them. your Mylee is beautiful as are her friends and what fun to make their aprons.

    1. We had real mum flowers which I loved the smell of them. Today, the mums are all faux. Almost everyone of the kiddos have one these days...lots of people make them very affordable for kids who would not be able to have one and they usually give them to them.

    1. Sometimes they are too big. my humble opinion. They wear them one day and then they just hang in the closets. lol. I know they have a lot of fun, cause I remember how much fun we had back in the day.

  8. Wow! I've never seen mums done like that before! What fun! We did have huge white mums for homecoming, with a red pipe cleaner letter T (for Tavares, our town) on them, and maybe a red ribbon to attach them, but that was it. (Our school colors were red and white). It was really special to have a mum, which usually meant you had a date! LOL. I love your school traditions. They look like a lot of fun. I know your kiddos will remember this all their lives!

    1. What you describe is kinda the way our's were too. Our mums were really flowers and today they are faux. Honestly, I think some of them are too big and look a little odd. Memories for these kids is what it's all about

  10. Wowzers ... those are some Mums...I have never heard of that tradition and the painted white overalls either. I guess I am really dating myself. I don't really remember too much about homecoming traditions either. It wasn't quite the "Thing" as it is now. It was more about picking a King and Queen and her attendants and decorating cars for a parade.
You have the most gorgeous Grands around.

    1. Around here, Homecoming has always been huge.. It's as if the County Fair has come to your school...LOL. They still do select a king and Queen and then of course, the big dance is tonight. I just finished making Mylee's bouquet for the dance. They really dress up almost as if it were prom. thank you for the compliment on my grands.. hugs.

    1. I love Homecoming...when past friends that you haven't seen in a long time come home for the game. Shanda actually painted Mylee's overall shorts. I think she did a great job..

  12. I LOVE this post. Cowbells & Glitter. What a fun combo of things and I love the celebration of it all. Very, very cool.

PS: I will post pictures next week. The two minis opened last night were Lidia Deets and Freddy Kruger - though not sure if that's how they both spell their names, I'm not in a place that I can check.

    Very fun though.

Happy rest of your weekend and boogie boogie.

  15. Wow! My high school sold mums for homecoming back in the late 80's. They were simple compared to those masterpieces. Impressive!
