I Sure Did...

I sure did.......   what you ask?

Go ahead, take a wild guess!  Nope, I didn't bake a pie or pull out the turkey platter EARLY.  I didn't even start wrapping Christmas gifts (yet).....  You can't wrap gifts if you haven't purchased them.  However, I DID do something that might just land me on Sant's good list.

I PUT UP MY CHRISTMAS TREE!! 🎄

YEP, ON OCTOBER 30TH.

It took me all afternoon (and I may have muttered a few frustrating words when the lights didn't cooperate), but by sunset, my living room was glowing. The twinkle lights, the cinnamon smell, and that first little ding-a-ling from my favorite old Christmas bell, made for a very fun and interesting afternoon.

Dried Orange slices and cinnamon sticks.

Before you start thinking I've lost all sense of calendar control, hear me out.  I am heading out on a five-day trip with my friends next week and after that, Sam will be having the biopsy on his lung.  Truth be told, I don't really know what the days after will bring.  So, I figured while I had the time and energy, I would go ahead and deck the halls.

This years theme for my tree is all about nature with a cozy charming feel.  Dried orange slices, clusters of red berries, old rustic bells, dried twigs, pine cones and a few extra's.  I love this type of tree because it makes my heart feel so hugged....like a favorite memory you can touch and hear jingling so softly.

I love the natural touches..... they remind me of Christmases when I was a kid.  We strung popcorn and made all kinds of homemade ornaments way back then.  I love old memories and never get tired of them. How sweet it is to bring nature inside.

....How soon is too soon to decorate for Christmas??  Ah, this is the age-old debate isn't it?  Some say you should wait until after the turkey leftovers are gone, while others (like me) are ready to untangle the lights before the Halloween candy has even disappeared.  Truth is, there is no "Too Soon" when it comes to doing what makes your heart happy and what works best for your family.  The season of comfort, kindness, twinkle lights and trees isn't about the date on the calendar...it's about the feeling in your heart.

While it's true that Christmas is all about the birth of Jesus Christ, decorating early gives us extra time to soak in the peace, the joy and the hope that comes with celebrating our Savior. It's not just about lights and ornaments, it's about preparing our hearts, slowing down long enough to notice the goodness around us. Every twinkle, every pine scented breath, and every carol playing softly in the background is a sweet reminder of why we celebrate in the first place:

BECAUSE.... LIGHT CAME INTO THE WORLD, AND WE GET TO REFLECT THAT LIGHT RIGHT HERE AT HOME.

So yes, I sure did.... I put my Christmas tree up in October, and I'm not feeling any regrets about doing so.  I hope you want laugh at me.   Who knows, some of you may even want to join me.

Anyways....I always like to be prepared and for this reason, come Thanksgiving, we will be dining on Turkey and the fixings, while enjoying the glistening movement of the lights on my Christmas Tree.

Some years call for changes and this is one of those years...

  1. Shug, you may have just convinced me to do something crazy this year :) Some years call for an extra dose of joy, don't they? Rules? What rules? :) Let's just enjoy life! Thanks for the inspiration, sweet friend.

  2. I agree with you 100%. We have the Nativity scene in a prominent place all year round as a constant reminder of what Christmas means. You did well by decorating early. The message of Christmas should be in our hearts at all time.

Wishing you and your family all the best all of the time. God bless.

  3. It looks beautiful!
I'm one of those people that doesn't put it up till after Thanksgiving - or maybe Thanksgiving night, but I get why you did it. It's good to be a step ahead of things!

  4. It brings you joy, so why not? It would be a dull world if we all did the same things at the same time.

  5. Good for knowing what works for you!

In the Catholic church the Christmas season doesn't end until Epiphany (12 days after the actual date), and I traditionally leave the decorations up until then. If I decorate early I'm afraid I would get tired of things so I hold off for a while putting them up.

  6. You inspired me!

Beautiful tree, love the orange slices and cinnamon.

I am going to put up a few things today too, lights on the mantel, decorative ice skates. The tree would have to be hauled up from the basement and most of the ornaments from the attic, so not doing that yet! 😂

  7. With everything y'all have been going through this year, I don't blame you one bit for setting up your lovely tree as soon as the time and opportunity presented itself. It is absolutely charming! May it shine the light of Jesus in your heart. Blessings!

  8. Go for it! I totally agree putting your tree up now with all that is going on. Anyway, it’s really none of our business what others do when you get down to brass tacks! We’re all individuals. My house is little and cozy, so I adhere to my own family tradition of putting off the Christmas decorating till Thanksgiving weekend.
Your tree and decorations are beautiful, Shug. Love them. I bet Christmas at your place with your huge family is magical. Merry Christmas, Shug 🎄

  9. I've always been a firm proponent of decorating your house your way, no matter the season. If it makes you smile, that's all that counts, you live there and your surroundings are your business. Of course, I'm also a huge fan of Auntie Mame and her "We need a little Christmas now" attitude. Enjoy it and Merry Christmas!!

  10. I totally agree with you my dear. It is what matters to us, and it is how life is working for us in that moment.
Our neighbors put up their Christmas tree the first of November, so they have you beat. Hee Hee!
    Love and prayers,
    Carla
P.S. I keep my nativity up year around.

  11. Shug, I am so glad that you put your tree up when you had both the time and energy to do it. The snap shots you've shown us are beautiful...and that Nativity...be still my heart. It is gorgeous! Praying for you to have a wonderful time away with your friends, and of course, for you and Sam as he undergoes the lung biopsy when you return home from your trip. xx

  13. I say Go For It !!
What ever makes your heart feel hugged is so Right.
Your timing is perfect. Last year was so blah for us due to Dave's issues in and out of ER. No tree or decorations...First time in 80 years. Christmas was celebrated at our son's home and that was nice but it wasn't "OUR" Christmas. Where we will be celebrating this year is still up in the air but I am going to plug along and get our tree up very soon. Can't go through another year of DULL. Sorry to be a Debbie Downer but this really stirred something in me. Got to make those memories even if its just for the two of us.
your tree with all of the natural things on it and the sparkly lights is gorgeous.
Have fun on your get away and prayers continuing for Sam and his biopsy.
    (((hugs)))
    Sue

  16. Most excellent. This is what I do every year. As soon as Halloween comes down, Christmas comes out and I already started shooting Christmas minis and got a great new mug, two weeks ago. So fun!

Now, some years I take Halloween down on Halloween, some years it's the next day. It all just depends on what's going on. Either way, I'm here for it!

Life is short, live it and have fun!

  17. That sounds like a great idea for you this year! Christmas has always been a rich, low-key event here. All presents wrapped and sent (if necessary) by Thanksgiving weekend. Now a lot fewer presents and I bought them today. Anyway, good for you! As always, love and prayers.
