From Sailboats to Sales Racks

Columbus Day!  That curious Monday in October 🎃 that tends to drift in like a ship through the fog. Some people celebrate it, others forget about it entirely, and a few just know it as a day when the mail doesn't run and the bank doors are locked all day long.

Do you remember learning about the ships when you were in school?  The Nina...the Pinta...and Santa Maria.  This stirs up memories for me of school projects.  To learn the name of the ships, our teacher had us learn an old song....

The Nina, The Pinta, The Santa Maria..add 'em up...one, two, three.

Sailin' high....sailing low...see Columbus go, go, go.

This is all of the lyrics that I remember!  lol.

We also colored maps and made paper hats!

Fast forward to Columbus Day today... I think the real celebration has shifted from exploration on the high seas, to exploration of the Columbus Day "Sales" that are so strongly advertised from furniture stores, car lots and online retail shops.

In many communities, Columbus Day has now evolved into Indigenous People's Day, a beautiful and respectful time to honor the first inhabitants of this land.  Their heritage, wisdom and contributions were huge in shaping America.

What if Columbus and his crew could see America today..... I am sure the word "Overwhelmed" would not even hold a light to how they would feel.  Can you imagine them using GPS rather than the stars to navigate by?

How will you all celebrate?  ME?  I most likely will celebrate by exploring in my kitchen.  Trying to figure out what I have in the pantry to cook a good meal with. I also plan to explore the UPS store this morning as well as Sam's Club (again).

How Blessed we are that these three little ships were able to conquer the massive waves as they came across the Ocean....We are Blessed to live in America!

Hope I didn't cause the Nina, the Pinta and the Santa Maria song to get stuck in your head for the day!!

Happy Columbus Day!!

  1. Happy Columbus Day to you and your family, Shug. I like the idea of exploring what you find in your kitchen to prepare a (surprise) meal. Let us know what you discover. We'll then call today "Shug's Kitchen Day".

    God bless.

  3. I remember learning about Columbus and there was some poem about In fourteen hundred ninety two Columbus sailed the ocean blue. I honestly never even remembered this day each year. This is the first time ever that I've had the day off since where I work gives all bank holidays off

  5. I remember all of the school crafts and songs as we prepared for the day. As a child living in San Francisco, it was a day off from school and a parade with floats celebrating Columbus. Good food and a day when San Franciscans came together as we were all Italian-Americans on this day! Sadly, Columbus Day is no longer recognized in the city but is Italian heritage Day. 🇮🇹
Hmm perhaps it is fitting to indulge in some comforting Italian food for this evening’s meal. Wishing you an adventurous Columbus Day!

  6. Happy Columbus Day, Shug! I'm so glad that President Trump declared it once again to be the official name for this holiday. No, I don't remember that song from school, but we did have to learn the names of Columbus' three ships. Blessings!

  7. I remember reading about the Nine, Pinta and Santa Maria -- but that's as far as our teacher went. (No imagination, lol)
No, I can't begin to fathom how Columbus and his crew fared; how spoiled we've become. Were I to time-travel back, no doubt I'd be the whiny passenger complaining about the spotty internet connection.
    Continuing prayers for Sam!

  8. We will be celebrating by going over the mountain once again for another doctor appointment! And probably McDonalds. Do you recall the scandalous gossip that Americus Vaspucious was really the first to discover America? Maybe that is how we got the name America? I need to Google that! I adore your new header!!! The pumpkins and matching stripe background. I always look forward to your new headers and background.

  11. Shug, first off continued prayers for your precious Sam. Prayers that the B12 shot will renew energy and things will progress in the right direction. (((hugs))) to you too.
I do remember the ditty about in 14hundred 92 Columbus sailed the ocean blue.
Banks and post office closed today and I am fixing Spaghetti for dinner. I'll pretend that I planned it that way to honor the Italian heritage of so many. (:0)

  12. I did not even know it was Columbus day and never celebrated it before. never had the day off either. I grew up with just the few holidays, as holidays. New Years, Christmas,
Thanksgiving,Easter, were the 4 our family celebrated and 4th of July, Labor day and Memorial day we knew but were nothing to us. other than no school on those days

  13. I was just told about Indigenous Day this afternoon. I think it's a nice way to remember and celebrate. The Native Americans were always here first, so it makes sense we honor them. That's nice that you mentioned that on your blog post today, Shug. That's really something that you remember all the names of the ships. And I remember those paper hats! Oh, those good 'ole school days. : )

  15. I still remember the first stanza of Joaquin Miller's poem:

Behind him lay the gray Azores,
    Behind the Gates of Hercules;
Before him not the ghosts of shores,
    Before him only shoreless seas.
The good mate said: “Now must we pray,
For lo! the very stars are gone.
Brave Admiral, speak; what shall I say?”
“Why, say, ‘Sail on! sail on! and on!’”

    Happy Columbus Day!

  16. I went to visit my friend in a nursing home today - and we talked about Columbus Day - and how it has changed to Indigenous People's Day. Christopher Columbus wouldn't believe it.

  17. I taught primary school for 27 years and did many a craft/lesson about Columbus Day. However, today I celebrated by doing multiple loads of laundry from our trip.

  18. You sure bring back the memories with that song! Lol I also think of it as Canadian Thanksgiving. Lol I also think of it as Indigenous Day as we have a lot of Native American culture up here and I think that part of history is so important too. Blessings on your week ahead my Lovely! xo

  20. Sending good wishes to you and Sam. Most places here where I live don't get this bank holiday off. Some do. But most have to go to work. And then others take it off for that extended fall weekend.
