Forever Neighbor

My Favorite Neighbor and Forever Friend...

Joining Michelle

I feel very Blessed to have a forever friend as my neighbor. Some people move into a neighborhood and barely learn thier neighbors' names.  Not me!
I have known my precious neighbor for a very, very long time.  Dorothy aka..Dotta was my 5th grade teacher and my all-time favorite!

Dorothy and her husband Bill.  Bill passed away 3 years ago.  I loved him as much as I love Dorothy.

I went from raising my hand in her classroom to borrowing sugar from her kitchen..... Life has a funny way of circling back, doesn't it?
We have been neighbors for years now and honestly, I think God knew I needed her close by....and she needed me.

We are like two peas in a pod.  We both love turning our homes into cozy, Pinterest-worthy spaces (though her home always seems just a little more magazine ready.)  We get giddy over holiday decorating....Pumpkins, Garland, Twinkling Lights, Christmas everything!
You name it, and we have probably hot-glued it together....at midnight... while trying to decide what we would be creating  next.
She tells me if something doesn't look right, and I do the same at her place.

I am so very thankful for her friendship that feels more like family..I'm thankful for the comfort of knowing there is someone just across the street who truly knows me well.  One thing I must share about my Dorothy is that she gets up early everyday, and before 7:00 am....she is fully dressed in the cutest outfits!!  Hair is done, jewelry is in place (earrings, bracelets, necklaces...rings) and she has on the cutest outfits around...shoes matching.  Speaking of shoes, when I was in her class at school, she always wore the most gorgeous high heels.  She would let a few of us girls in her class wear her shoes for a while in the classroom.  We really thought we were big!!

How old is my friend?  She is 86!!

I am thankful for her.....for her kindness, her humor, her big heart and for the way she always seems to know when to pop in for a chat.  She is living proof that the best neighbors are not just close in distance, they're close in heart.

I love lifelong connections, and I must say that it is pretty sweet when your favorite teacher becomes your favorite neighbor.....
This is an A+ blessing!!

Happy Thursday....
Shug 💛

  1. What a sweet post about your forever friend, Shug. How precious it is to have that special friend in our lives that is always there with welcoming arms. Makes me think back to a few teachers that I had, both in elementary school and junior high/high school, that I remained friends with until they passed away.

  3. sounds wonderful, other than when a child growing up next to my aunt, grandmother I have never had neighbor friend other than one for 3 years about 50 years ago. we moved a lot, I have lived in 3 states and 30 different homes/apts but the last 38 right in this house because I married a ROCK and no matter how I pushed here we are... you are truly blessed with Dotta and your long time friend. I have no friends other than cousins that I have been life time friends with. the few I had from Jr high, 6 of them have all died in the past 6 years. very sad for me, I am the last one standing and the 2nd oldest of all the cousins

  10. Oh, what an inspiring, miraculous true-life story, Shug! What are the odds of that actually happening to any of us? I do think it's a God thing, for sure. He knew you all would need each other to stay together throughout your journey. I'm thankful that you shared Dorothy with us here today. Blessings!

  16. That is the best story ever! I want a neighbor Dotta in my life. I am trying to stop myself from being jealous...but instead I will pray for a Dorothy to come into my life and in my neighborhood. You are blessed indeed, my friend. I can picture her high fashion in my mind...so cute!

  17. What an incredible blessing -- for both of y'all! I remember having a high school teacher who, like Dotta dressed "to the 9's" ... to include a big (paper) rose on her jacket. Even the parents remarked about Bess' stature.
Your story needs picked up by Good Housekeeping!

  18. Wow! I guess you know how blessed you are! I sometimes wonder about my old school teachers- there are several that I wish I had kept up with. It would have been hard though, considering we moved every four years in the air force. But I have very fond memories.

  20. I love this post! I was fortunate enough to become friends with my high school Jr. year English teacher, who was the most difficult teacher I ever had. Who would have ever thought 8 years later we would become friends.

  23. Shug, what a blessing to have such a sweet relationship with your neighbor! I love the way the Lord puts people in our lives that feel more like family than friends. Thanks for sharing this little view of your relationship.

  24. What a sweet story, Shug. It's so nice to have good neighbors, and this one sounds like a close person you can relate to and share decorating ideas with. So funny that she let some of the girls try her high heels on in the classroom. It seems many people don't know their neighbors these days. I also have a circle of friendly and helpful neighbors that I can borrow sugar, milk, or just talk with when outside doing yard work. It's wonderful you have Dorothy in your life. I just mentioned K at K's Boutique on my Monday post. Guess who she reminds me of? You! It's like going in her shop and having a conversation with Shug haha. She looks like you, and she has a southern accent like you. She's one of my favorite people in town. ; )
