Are your Ducks in a Row

For years, I've heard people proudly declare, "I've got my ducks in a row!" Meanwhile, I'm over here with a feathered circus.

My ducks aren't in a row.....they are scattered in several different directions. One of them is probably at Target trying to buy snacks we don't even need.....another one is lost in a Netflix binge, and one very confused duck is most likely not even a duck, but a pigeon just doing it's best. Bless him, Bless me!

Have your ducks ever been on strike?  lol.  I think mine are hiding in my sweet neighbors yard, laughing as they are watching me panic....and the one that I think might be a pigeon?? proof that not everything in life is going to make sense.

What on earth am I talking about?  Life!  When you have an OCD personality, "ducks not in a row" doesn't mean just a little chaos. It means You are mentally rearranging them at 2:00 a.m. and you are wide awake thinking "If only duck #3 would just scoot two inches left, we could all sleep better."

The truth is, when your personality leans toward OCD and your ducks are misaligned, it feels a bit like your world's picture frame is crooked and to make things even worse, it appears that someone purposely glued that frame to the wall....CROOKED!  Does a crooked hanging picture bother you?  I'll raise my hand to this...

BUT....(you know there is always a BUT) Here is the kicker:  sometimes the messiest ducks (including my pigeon) end up being the ones that bring the most laughter.  Order always feels safe and calm to me...but the chaos?  This is where the funny stories come from and they end up making my life so fun.

Never fear though....The duck wrangler is here today and has everything under control.

1.  The dirty grout on my kitchen floor will be cleaned by the afternoon.

2. The extra pile of laundry will be sorted, washed and put up today.

3.  Those pop up thoughts that kept me partially awake last night will be written down and taken care of in a timely manner.

Oh yes....appointments will be made and marked on the calendar....Meal plans will be made....and I will get the smallest ducks inline.

Isn't it crazy how when we lay down to get eight hours of good sleep,  that's when the ducks get rowdy?  Especially when one is pacing over an email you forgot to send, and another one is quacking about tomorrow's grocery list.

None of it is life-or-death important, but those ducks sure make it feel urgent at 2:00 a.m. ......and mine were working overtime last night.

Here is the bright side to this post...sometimes those restless ducks are really just reminders that our minds are full, our lives are layered, we are human, and we deeply care about things getting done right.  Morning always comes and the sun rises, my coffee is brewing and somehow all of my ducks have started shuffling back into place...even my pigeon in disguise.

Just proof that I am living a full, beautiful life, perhaps a bit messy at times, but still wonderful.

I keep repeating...I am good! Life is good! God is good!

Shug.....🦆

  1. I think my ducks might be hanging out with yours, but I am not even going to try and wrangle them today. TheHub is the one in our family with the ODC tendencies and I know I drive him crazy

    1. I like that Anne....just let those ducks wander where they want to go....no need in wearing ourselves out worrying about the ducks.

  2. (((((((((Shug)))))))) May your ducks find their way in the proper row soon, dear friend. Mine never did so I got rid of them years ago. I traded them in for squirrels that scamper around every which way, in happiness. *hugs* Love, Andrea xoxo

  3. I love the pigeon that thinks it's a duck. Square pegs and round holes spring to mind.

  4. My ducks have not been in a row since June. After a while you get used to it because each day is different and has it's own needs. I am going with the flow. Sorry to hear that you are in a waiting mode again...sometimes it seems that is the medical establishment's mantra hurry up and wait and see really sucks.

  5. Oh my dear Shug - you always give me a giggle. Love every bit of this and relate VERY WELL! I think your ducks and my ducks could go out and have a pool party together. I think all we can do in this life is our best and definitely hop in the boat and enjoy the ride. 😉 Blessings on your week ahead. xo

  6. Cute post and it made me think.

Getting my "ducks in a row" God's way involves aligning my life with the truth of who I am in Christ and relying on His guidance and strength. It's about living my new identity and trusting in the finished work of Jesus. 🐤🐤

  8. My ducks are all over the place and each one seems to be marching to the beat of their own drummer. At least there's a nice beat that goes with all that drumming

  9. Oh yes, Shug - I am always getting my ducks in a row and you have reminded me to just let them splash around in the water for a while and not worry about what they are up to!

  11. I've learned, sometimes the hard way, that I can't control my "ducks," but I can trust God to look out for them and guide them in just the way He wants them to go. How your humor shines in your post today, Shug! I couldn't help but chuckle as I read. Blessings!

  12. You are so right, Shug! I think about what if I was unable to do almost anything and didn't have much of a life. Then I would be wishing for things to do!! But why is it always right after I go to be that all my good ideas start to form? And I'm too tired to get back up and write them down. So by the morning I have forgotten them all!

But, one day may we all hear " Well Done Good and Faithful servant"

  14. Every once in a blue moon my ducks appear to be behaving themselves, but it doesn't take much to scatter them again.

  16. This may be my favorite of all your posts! Guilty (as charged) and giggling over the feathered circus. I may have to buy myself a rubber ducky to keep as a reminder.

  17. Well, I have some OCD as well, so I understand what you are talking about. How, right now, you could get your mind to relax, is more than I can fathom.
You have a lot of real issues going on now. Some thinking is good.
On the other hand, we make plans, and God laughs. I have worried about so many things that never came to pass.
I love that no matter what - you can see the joy in the other side of perfection and can just enjoy.
About Sam, he is a candidate for a liver transplant?

  18. True, having ducks, whether in a row or not, is proof that we are alive. My advice: Start a new hobby - like collecting dust bunnies in envelopes and noting the date and place where you found them. I have envelopes dating back to the Jurassic period. Now I need to build an extension to our house to keep them there.

    God bless.

  19. Shug, I think my ducks are rebellious ones. They refuse to line up like I want them to. They trick me into thinking they are lining up and then one little bump in the road and they scatter like cats :) I have to give it to myself though...I'm persistent! I've been trying to line them up for years now and I'm just stubborn enough to keep trying :)
