Pear Picking

***Quick update on my dental surgery.  Everything went well and I am now home with a tea bag in my mouth...This is what the doctor told me do to stop the bleeding.  I was put to sleep so I did not feel anything!!  Hopefully the swelling will be minimal with little pain if any.

Last night, our little trip out to the farm turned into a full adventure for Sam, Trista and myself.

We started off with some good, old-fashioned pear picking!  The trees were loaded down with beautiful "Orient" pears....the kind that is so good for making Pear Relish as well as Pear Preserves.

We ended up with about 2 bushels of these delicious sweet pears!

After our picking adventure is when the real excitement of our evening came.  As we drove around the farm, we spotted two big bucks.  My picture of the one in the picture below is not very clear, but you can see that he was sporting a nice size rack of horns.

Just ahead of the two bucks, we happened upon 4 graceful does that had lightly stepped through the grass....Their white tales caught our eyes as they began to head for the woods.

Now, this is when it gets exciting... (all of it was exciting, but it's not everyday that you see an alligator in your lake).  Just in the past few weeks did we realize that there is an alligator making it's home at one of the lakes on the farm.  This big thing was lazily gliding through the water when Trista spotted it.  This really got our heart rates up.  We could see it's big head raised out of the water and after about 5 minutes, it went under the water.

I was a bit worried because as the alligator went down, along came a big nutria swimming in the same area....I honestly figured it might soon become the alligators evening meal.

Before we drove away from the lake, Trista spotted two other nutrias.  They were out for their evening exercise I suppose...

                                Once again.....not a clear photo

As we drove through the fields, we spotted several other does as they were feeding on the green grasses.  This was on those evenings that reminds you why the fam feels like a small piece of heaven. Fresh air, unexpected wildlife encounters, and the kind of stillness that makes you breath a little deeper.

By the time we headed home, our baskets were full of pears and our hearts so full of wonder.

Sadly, none of us captured a picture of the alligator, but I promise you it is there.  Same for the Nutrias....I guess we were too excited.

Hugs to all....

Shug...

  1. It's probably too much to hope that all the nutrias in the area will remain safe from the alligator's jaws . . . What a splendid wildlife time you had , though.

Second, I think alligator are amazing creatures. They just fascinate me. I know that might be strange, but they do. ;-)

  4. Shug, I didn't know you had pear trees at the farm. You know, they used to be my favorite fruit.....until cherries took their place. ; ) What a nice adventure you had with the pears and the alligator and the BUCKS! I see many deer up here even in my neighborhood, but they are Does, and I long to see the Bucks. I'm wondering what happens with all the pears on the trees that are leftover? I'm sure the deer feed on them. A sweet picture of Sam and Trista. And I noticed her pretty nails. ; )

  5. Shug, I am having some serious Pear Envy right now. One of my favorite fruits and our poor little tree in the backyard didn't bear any this year. Its so sad. Enjoy some for me.
Been praying for you and your wisdom teeth extraction. Hope your recovery will be quick and complete.
Love all the wildlife on your farm, but I'm not too fond of that alligator making himself so at home...

  6. I have to admit, my knowledge of alligators is quite limited, other than their notorious presence in Florida. I was surprised you have them in Texas. Recently, I heard about an alligator sighting in a lake located in an area where alligators typically aren’t found. I tried to dig deeper for more information, but I couldn't locate any details. Honestly, that is why I do not like to swim in lakes - I'm much more comfortable in a pool where I can see the bottom. Too many invasive species like pythons and such.
The pears look delicious. I like a good pear.

  7. Even though we live in a populated area, there are lots of woods surrounding us, so we see deer quite frequently here. Yesterday, I was fortunate to see a doe and her fawn in our front yard. Such elegant creatures! Those pears look delightful, but I'll pass on the alligator. Blessings, Shug!

  8. Thankful that you are home from your oral surgery and that all went well.
What a lovely evening you had. That buck had quite a nice rack! And the pears look amazing! Not sure how I feel about alligators. But I am thankful that you had such a nice evening out at the farm. xx

  9. Are Nutrias kind of like Capybaras? They are a kind of rodent? Oh, I hope the gator does not eat them!!! That is scary, you need to watch out for him creeping up on the land!!! I have never seen a buck with such a huge rack, what a cool day!! Never heard of the teabag trick. Did he give you painkillers?

  11. You sure did have an adventure - I am not thrilled that you have an alligator in your pond - but if you aren't worried - lol.
    I love pears.
I sure hope your teeth don't start to hurt - I am surprised you did all that with just having dental surgery! You go girl.

  12. thecontemplativecat here. Congratulations on surviving dental stuff more now that we are elderly, acc, to our dentist. Pears ! Not a big fruit here, sadly. A church friend had a huge old tree of them, loaded. I ate so many that I spent time in the bathroom for hours.

  14. So glad your surgery went well. I remember using a tea bag when I had a tooth pulled. It always seemed to bleed forever.

The deer is delightful...and it doesn't matter to me that the photo isn't totally clear, I can see the deer, and it is beautiful! I love pears...these look delicious! And so nice to see beautiful smiling faces as well. I love your blog background as well, dear friend.

  19. Oh Shug, hope all is well after the surgery. Each day will get better. I had no idea there could be an allegator in a lake in Georgia. Somehow,I just kind of equated them with Florida. And a nutria? What are they like? I thought they were in South America. Learn something new every day. Have a good day today, dear friend. Susan

  20. Wow, you DID have quite the exiting evening! That buck is huge! And the does are so beautiful. You have alligators in Texas? I didn't know that! And I've never seen a Nutria. I need to look that one up. Those pears look delicious! Do you have a house at the farm property, or is it just land? Sounds like a piece of paradise! except for the alligator. LOL. Glad your dental surgery was successful. Tea bags are good for that, and also for bee stings! (And also for good tea!) Have a good rest of your week.
