Edna!

My name is Edna.  I'm a lawn chair but NOT the modern kind that you find in the big stores today. You know….those chairs that can do all kinds of things and some of them even have a sun visor to keep the sun off of you. No ma'am, No sir, ....I an an old school lawn chair.

I was once a beautiful blue color, but perhaps I'm now a bit faded. My frame is solid but makes a little noise if you sit down too fast....Or at least it used to. I live out back, under the shade tree, and I haven't been folded up in very, very long time. Perhaps that is like me having a badge of honor.

Life is simple here.  I don't do much, but I see everything.

I've been the official seat for Pops during his iced tea hour. I've also been the official seat for Shug during her garden breaks or for the occasional popsicle emergency. I've held babies, spent some time by the pool cooling off bare feet, and been the listening ear for all of the porch gossip. No one tells secrets on purpose, but you would be amazed what people will share when they think no one's really listening.  LOL

Birds land on my armrest and one time a squirrel stored a pecan in my seat.  Sometimes I get left out in the rain, but I don't mind. I was made to stay put and to soak it all in.

There are now many younger chairs around this place and one of them even has a built in speaker...Can you believe that?  The newer chairs get to go places like ballgames or to friends homes when there is a cookout.  I guess I'm just made for staying grounded.

I have had a front row seat for many years during the Summer months and even though I am Older and Worn out, I hope I get to hang around a while longer.

Pops says I need to go in the trash, but with some tender loving care, I know I have many more years to give. I'm sure you would love to see what I look like, so I am including a photo of myself.  Did I tell you that my name is Edna??

Unfortunately ..... Edna's seat broke this past week, so Sam cut it away from the frame.  Should she be salvaged? Or go to the Dump?

Shug....

  1. She should be salvaged. It is easy to re-upholster her and also put a new back and arm rests. New colour perhaps. The frame looks OK. Save her.

    God bless.

  2. Give that old girl a makeover!! I was just going to comment on your old comfy flip-flops, and here comes Edna! Made me smile... Way too many memories! Or paint her and had some bright fabric and put her in the flower garden with some planter flower pot of some sort, or just place a board on the seat part to hold the planter of flowers! Blessings, Roxy

  3. I think I agree with glory.. save her but not to sit on, unless of course Sam can make Edna safe to sit on. I really enjoyed Edna's story and so glad to meet her.. I am humming Leanne Rhymes Blue, Edna deserves it

  4. Edna has a great story, she should be saved for all she's given over the years!

  5. Salvaged! I have redwood furniture my folks bought off a truck in San Francisco in 1960. Dogs have chewed parts of it, and I’ve fixed and repaired and stained throughout the decades. I never throw anything out that I can find good use for. The landfill is crowded enough. If not a chair, use the frame for something.

Love the story of Edna though- makes me think of us as we age.

    1. You could add rustic unfinished wood, attach to the frame in a way to hold potted plants!

  6. What a delightful story, Shug. Some things just need to be kept, right? I was wondering at the end of the story what happened to the seat, and then you mentioned it. Thanks for that, as I would have felt incomplete without knowing haha. I had a little mermaid statue that was darling, and I even named it Sebastian. It was heavy, and the tail got chipped off. Me not liking chips or breaks, was thinking of giving it away, but Jess and Nel said No, I'll take it. So, he lives on in the family at Jess' house. I think if you love Edna, you should keep her. Can you imagine the stories she could tell while people sat on her and chatted? ; )

  9. I love the header photo on your blog as well as your background! Edna could be repurposed, perhaps, made into something else that you could use, enjoy and appreciate. You are so clever, Shug, such a lovely post.

  10. What a delightful story about Edna. Please keep her and repurpose her. I think some rustic wood would make a great shelf for some potted plants in your garden. A little spray paint and walla..she's ready for some new adventures.
Since we are going through so many "treasures" for our sale, I am finding there are some things that I just can't part with. Too many memories surrounding the item. Some of them have gone back into my closet for a future time when I will be ready to release them. More BLOG FODDER for sure. Thanks for the prompts.

  11. You know, it depends upon your time, energy and money. We just did a dump run after a clean up!

  12. Oh my, for some reason, this post affected me so deeply that I was brought to tears!! I declare, you can bring life to ANYTHING! And once a thing has a name, how can you get rid of it? Of course you must keep it. I'm thinking maybe a flowerpot in the center or some other way to make it yard art. Oh, your glorious pink post today, so pretty! What are these little pink flowers, Bee Balm? It was just like eye candy to see your header and background. Ginny

  13. Oh, poor Edna - and we've only just made her acquaintance. Maybe it's time for her to retire gracefully.

  14. Oh my! After seeing Edna's sad condition, my first thought was it's time for Edna to be retired...but then after reading everyone else's ideas about giving her new life with a new seat or a board to hold flowers, well, my thoughts were changed to Yes! Let's save Edna and repurpose or revive or revitalize her! She's like a sweet dear old Auntie who needs to be treated with love and respect and given a new lease on life! So, now the ball is in your court. We will all be waiting to see what Edna's new life/look will be!!

  15. Of course you should save her! What else would an 85-year-old married to a 90-year-old say?

  16. I'm all for saving things from the landfill, but it doesn't seem right to put new fabric on a grand dowager like Edna. I would vote for some type of repurposing that lets her shine.

  17. I'm on team salvage Edna. As an upholstery cleaner, I've seen first hand the benefits of cleaning and re-upholstering beloved furniture rather than throwing it away. The way you told Edna's story was beautiful, by the way. I feel emotionally connected to a lawn chair I've personally never sat in or seen. You've got a lot of talent and I'm excited to read more of your posts.

  18. How I love this first-person story, Shug. A children's book, perhaps?
My first instinct is to repurpose her -- perhaps an 'out house' seat with a hole to accommodate a planter. I can't wait to hear the "rest of the story" like Paul Harvey used to say.

PS - Your new background seriously makes me want to swipe my finger across these petals and lick the frosting!

  19. Oh I've missed you Shug. Life got in the way and I just haven't been able to visit like I would like to. I live Edna...never put a old friend in the garbage. Since Myk painted my old boston rocker black it's like I have a brand new rocker!! Someday, maybe they will just repaint me!!! haha. So glad to be back. Love your blog and your kind words on mine. Hugs

  20. I'm all for salvaging her if you can. When you said old style chair I was thinking of the kind that we had when I was growing up. The ones with the webbing that would wear out after too much time in the sun. My dad would always buy new webbing and fix them. Those were the days when things either lasted forever or were fixed. Now everything is so disposable.

  21. Loved reading Edna's story. It made me smile.
I think you should salvage her--and keep her color blue.
