Saturday Evening Meal

Good Sunday Morning....

Today, I'm posting a little humor about our Saturday evening dinner last night.  Since my little surgical adventure of having two wisdom teeth removed, I've been living on soup.  A little broth and of course my potato soup that I had made the day before I had the procedure.

Last night though, Sam and I decided enough was enough of the soup diet.  I was ready for a real meal.....by real I mean as real as someone with chipmunk cheeks can manage. So, off we went to Cracker Barrel with a big plan.  Pancakes...fluffy, syrup dripping pancakes I just knew would be an easy win for me.

We sat down.....and sat....and sat some more.  Ten minutes passed, and I started to wonder if somehow we had been seated in the "invisible customer" section.  I finally went up front and sweetly asked if we had a waitress.

Eventually, a kind girl showed up and took our drink order and even brought out the biscuits and cornbread muffins that they usually serve.

We thought surely this would be fast since our order was going to be so simple.  Little did we know that it would be another 30 minutes before we were able to place our order.  When the waitress did finally come, we gave her our very simple order of pancakes and scrambled eggs.

As the end of the first 30 minutes arrived, the waitress came to our table to let us know that her device that she uses to place the orders, had crashed and that she had to completely re-order our meal.  You guessed it.....another 30-40 minutes before the meal finally made it to our table.

Bless her heart, our waitress was trying so hard and we could tell that she was so very stressed.  She brought me an extra pancake as an apology, which was very sweet, but I could not eat a third pancake.  she even comped our drinks for the trouble.  All I could think about was, what if that was my daughter or granddaughter working and having such a stressful evening.

The silver lining?  The long wait gave me time to wander the gift shop.  I am totally crazy about those adorable jeweled trinket boxes and I found two really cute ones that I knew I needed to come home with. So, while it wasn't the quickest dinner we've ever had, I left with a full tummy and a couple of sparkly treasures.

In spite of the long delay of receiving our food, Sam left this young lady a nice tip.....hopefully it made her stress a little lighter.

Today....I am thankful for:

The rain that fell yesterday in our area...

I'm thankful that we had a house full of our kids here yesterday, enjoying the pool and just visiting.

I'm thankful for each of you!!

Hugs to all on this beautiful day..

Shug.

  1. Wow that was some dinner you had. You really made lemonade out of lemons. Good for you. That poor waitress ... its difficult to be in the industry when things don't work.
Love those trinket boxes. My favorite thing about Cracker Barrel is the gift shop. There are always some quirky little things to tempt me.

  2. What a wonderful example of patience you and Sam provided!

  3. That was kind of you to leave her a nice tip. These things are usually not the waitress' fault, or anyone's really.

  4. I'm so sorry this happened to you & Sam, Shug. This seems to be the norm rather than the exception around our area. Businesses are having a very hard time finding workers & often times run short...therefore causing the problem you had last evening. We seldom go out to eat but we've experienced the worker shortage problem in other businesses. Love, Andrea xoxo

  7. Good for you two, for keeping a good attitude and seeing the positive in a frustrating situation. The service industry is harder than ever with such a shortage of help. I'm sure you were a bright spot in her night.

  8. Way to turn a poor dinner experience around! I don't know of many folks who'd be as kind and empathetic to that server ... as a matter of face, I'm hearing more and more "I'll never go back!" horror stories about our Cracker Barrel. I think it all depends on the server's attitude and it sounds like yours was a sweetie.
BTW, I took pictures of Tom's TV/hearing aid connector and will send them to you in a Facebook private message. He got his together with his hearing aids from the VA, but I think it's also available on Amazon. Thanks for asking!

  9. I've had a similar experience at Cracker Barrel in the past. Unfortunately my husband was not quite so patient. I confess that I was a bit annoyed myself. That might have been more from listening to him complain though instead of the wait.
Your treasures are awesome. I love browsing their gift shop

  10. SHUG, what a huge blessing you are to the people around you!!! You are always so empathetic. So many people would be mean and complain, or walk out. I hope others will model your wonderful Christian love for everyone. Our Cracker Barrell is famous for being so slow. I love the owl box, and will be popping into their gift shop today!!

  13. The last two times we went to our local Cracker Barrel, we experienced that same sort of unusually long wait, but our waitress, we could tell, was slammed. Both times, she got a good tip anyway. As Danny and I once worked in food service way back in the day, we understand that things like this can happen and it's almost always happening with the kitchen, not the wait staff. I do like the goodies you bought in the gift store, too, Shug. It's hard to resist looking and buying, isn't it? Glad you got through the wisdom teeth removal successfully. Blessings!

  15. Just got back from Cracker Barrell, and I saw your bejeweled boxes behind the checkout. SO cute! I will go back with my camera; they have so many unusual things!

  16. I am thankful for our rain this morning too - and the cooler weather for just this week. It has been brutal here.
I love, love, love Cracker Barrel. Sorry it was so bad. Nice of Sam to leave a nice tip.

  17. I wish we had a Cracker Barrel here. The only one I’ve ever been to was in Cullman, Alabama. Even while my mouth is watering thinking of buttermilk biscuits, we wouldn’t have waited that long even if it’s not the server’s fault. Sam and you are very kind to wait so patiently and a big tip on top of that. So nice of you!

  18. I love that you showed her grace. Yes, kitchen jobs are not filled with rainbows and butterflies. The amount of stress and agravation that goes into plates of food is AMAZING. Happy New Week. PS: Do you have an ihop?

  19. Oh my, that was a long time to wait, but for fluffy pancakes it was probably worth it. You were so kind to her and understanding, Shug. So good of Sam to leave her a nice tip too. And what fun to browse through the gift shop. I LOVE those trinket boxes, and they actually sell them at Hobby Lobby. My best friend gave me a hummingbird, which I treasure. Your little dog and owl are delightful. Yaaay, rain! I'm hoping for some this Fall. You always show your brightness in unpleasant moments, Shug.

  20. Sounds like they are understaffed, greedy corporations charge inflated prices while skimping on having adequate help, they don't want to pay employees. If people got up and left after a few minutes, they would stop doing this.

  21. It can be frustrating when restaurant service is slow; but if they explain the problem we sympathise with them for the delay. Gladly, you had a good time, and an extra pancake. Could you send it to me if you did not need it please?

    God bless.

  22. We have had similar issues with both of our Cracker Barrels here in town. I am starting to wonder if it's a Cracker Barrel thing. ANYWAYS, wishing you a lovely week. smiles

  25. My sympathies on the wisdom teeth removal. I know from experience that it is not fun. Glad you and Sam are kind and understanding people. Often folks being waited on are not so kind.

  26. Oh Shug, I feel like I need to introduce myself as it's been so long since I commented on your wonderful blog. We had a similar experience with Cracker Barrel on our last trip to Tucson. But the goodside, the gift shop. What cute little sparkles you got. Hopfully I'm now out of pain, and will get back to posting and comments. Love you

  27. I think sometimes modern technology is more of a pain than the good old fashioned way. Lol But you handled it with such grace and are a shining example of the motto don't sweat the small stuff. And in fact even looked at the blessings hidden within the hassle. (those boxes are adorable) Could not love that more! Hope your mouth continues to heal up well. xoxo
