I really wanted to bake some cookies yesterday afternoon, but I somehow felt too tired to do so. Instead, I did something that I never ever do.....I took a nap, ....in my bed.
Making cookies can get a little messy and they take a little time. I just could not muster up enough energy to deal with preparing the cookies.
Then...... I started thinking about cookies and how even a small bunch of chocolate chip cookies can deliver a good Sunday message. A sermon so to speak...
Think about it!! When you make cookies from scratch (I always do) ....you end up with a bit extra flour on the cabinets and I usually spill some of the sugar because I most likely have gone above the top of the measuring cup line. Then, there is the butter...it refuses to soften fast enough. I end up with extra bowls and spoons to wash and usually have to give the kitchen floor a good sweep as I go along.
Once those ingredients are mixed together...sweet, salty, rich, plain...they become something greater than the sum of their parts.
This is just like LIFE!! God takes our scattered pieces, He stirs them together and somehow makes something beautiful out of us.
I think the most important sermon that can come from cookie baking is that they are meant to be shared. A cookie by itself is very nice, but a plate of cookies handed to a friend or neighbor....wow, this is joy multiplied.
The cookie sermon is important because it points us back to hope. Your mess has meaning!! The heat doesn't last forever!! Joy grows when we share what we have been given, and every bite is a reminder that God sprinkles sweetness into our lives even when we make a mess of it. Just like cookies FRESH from the oven, life is best when it's warm, shared and enjoyed with family and friends. Now, I need to bake some cookies don't I?
Happy Sunday!!

Happy Sunday Shug and Happy Birthday!
ReplyDeleteI do love your "cookie sermon". Yes there is definitely joy in giving. I did that last week giving my next door neighbor a fresh baked banana bread. She was so surprised and grateful. She later that day brought over some of the last of her Asian pears she had picked from her tree. They are so sweet ... just as sweet as she is.

Now I want some homemade chocolate chip cookies. 🍪 I don’t bake in the summer but in a few more months I will start. Cute analogy which you are so good at. I’ll no doubt think on your words the next time I bake.
ReplyDeleteYour cookie sermon is genius, Shug! I absolutely loved the analogies, especially how broken cookies can still taste good and God will straighten out our messes. My He bless you today and always!
