Loving Roosters...

Hey y'all.....I want to give out a big shout of congratulations to Marty over @ A Stroll Thru Life for her 100th Table Top Tuesday celebration party!  She is such a gracious host!
Thanks Marty!

Roosters are popping up everywhere....They seem to be crowing about something!  Could it be the next "Must Have?"

I must admit.....I am pretty crazy about them myself.
I have always loved chickens and roosters.  Just the other day, I was telling Sam how much I really would love to have some chickens.....His response was: "Where would you put them?"

Being that we live right smack dab in the middle of town, I did understand that question very well.....but surely a chicken or two running around in my "fenced in" backyard wouldn't cause that many problems!!

Now mind you, I don't really know very much about chickens.....but I do know that I would love to have
fresh eggs for breakfast some mornings.

For all you chicken folks....I would love to know if they (the chickens) will lay eggs without a rooster?  Or, would I have to have a rooster to boot?

I can see how, having a rooster in town might
cause some problems with my neighbors......I would enjoy the early morning crowing, but for my neighbor that sleeps until noon, I think this might be a NOT SO GOOD thing....

For me, there is something satisfying, rejuvenating and comforting about hearing a rooster crow.  This sound reminds me of all the happy times I had as a child, while visiting at my aunt's house.

Maybe I need a farm!?  But....I don't really want a whole lot of chickens....just a couple...with 2, that would be an egg for me and an egg for Sam.   Hmmmmm....now that I think about it, I might would need 3 or 4 chickens.....

Oh well.....good thoughts here....and something good
to "Crow" about!

Hope you enjoy all the daily joys that surround us!!
shug........

  1. Hi Shug

I'm wanting some hens myself and am planning on getting some very soon. Took me 2 years to talk my hubby into it! haha!

I understand from the "experts" out there (and you know who you are!) that NO, you don't need a rooster for eggs. AND that the hens don't lay as much in the winter, so you might want to have 3-4 hens. Check with your city ordinances and see if it's legal where you live.

I'm sure loving your roosters and chickens in your kitchen!

  3. I'm with you, Shug.
I'd like to have some chickens,
but we travel too much and there's no one to take care of them.
Some city ordinances don't allow chickens in town.
    Good luck!

  4. I loved seeing all your roosters, Shug!!! Guess what? We just got a new rooster, too! But for outside, his tail is a weather vane! Of course he is not real, but there's a good story about him, we named him Roscoe. I read an article about a food critic who tested her own farm eggs against fresh grocery store ones, and had her friends come over. They cooked them all the same. Not too much difference in taste except the yolks stood up higher and tasted a bit creamier.

  5. You don't need a rooster for the hens to lay eggs....only if you want those eggs fertilized. When I had chickens I always found that "my girls" were much more relaxed without a rooster around nosing in their business. lol

  7. Oh,you would love my rooster collection. I've been collecting them about 10-12 years. I no longer collect any except tiny ones because I've run out of room. But, I do love them. They have such personality! I'll have to do a blog post and show some pics of them. Love yours!

    Happy week!

  10. Nice to know you don't need a rooster for the hen to lay eggs, so maybe Sam can be talked into it? Fresh eggs sounds so delightful!

  11. Don't you have a neighbor that doesn't take care of their dogs....now that might be a problem! Surprised that Sam even responded to your request.

  12. Nope. No rooster necessary for eggs... unless you want chicks. ;) Fresh eggs are sooooo much better than store bought! blessings ~ Tanna

  13. My neighbors have 6 hens and you would be surprised how noisy they are. Glad I don't live right next do them as they are across the street. Roosters are illegal here in our city - good thing. They have brought over the eggs once in a while and they are wonderful. I can see why people have chickens and the kids love to go and see them too.
